1980.

When you get your next S&W (you ARE getting more, right?), note that there's a sticky thread specifically for date-of-birth questions.

You will love that gun. I am blessed with one 29-2 and one 29-3. They are a hoot to shoot.

I also have a 29-2, 6 1/2 inch, SN-N437xxx. Picked it up at a gun show many years ago. Love, Love, Love it. You will enjoy every round you put through it. I reload and keep it near starting loads with 240g cast. Still no problem busting clay birds at 100 yds. Don't know exactly what year it was made, just know it's pre-79. Been told I should put it away, but can't help it. Besides, my boys are going to have to arm wrestle for it when I'm gone. It will never be for sale at any price.

Why????

I got one close to yours (N541XXX), I got it new and shoot the crap out of it, it still looks brand new.

I use a 240 gran cast SWC with 20 grns of 2400, not a light load but it doesn't hurt the gun. Accurate too.

Every now and then I take it out and wipe it down with RIG (best protection I've found for Blued guns.

Why? well that was my response. Don't own a gun I won't shoot. Mine still looks new and it goes to the range at least 3 times a month. Got me curious so I looked it up on S&W forum. If it is accurate mine is 1978. Just a pup. Got socks older than that.

Some people say not to shoot them, or do not shoot them much. They are not as "durable" as later guns. And, as far as that goes, they are right.

BUT, They are fully fine working guns, just not originally designed with a huger number of heavy loads in mind. If you want a gun to shoot the heaviest loads practical, in multiple case lots without needing tuning, the 29, even in its latest beefed up versions isn't the king of the hill.

On the other hand, if you aren't contemplating putting thousands of red line loads a year for decades, the 29 is a fine revolver. Fit, balance, sights, and the legendary trigger pull are all top shelf.

I have a 29-2, inherited from my Father a decade ago. Most of what I shoot is either a lead SWC at around 1100fps or a jacketed 240gr around 12-1300 and change. For heavier loads, I go to other guns, not so much from worry about the 29, but different grip shapes (SA, auto) are more pleasant (or less uncomfortable) to shoot the really hard kickers.

I shoot the heck out of my -1 and have never had any problems and don't expect to. Full disclosure, I shoot specials out of it most of the time but my hunting loads are approaching "Ruger only" loads

Still have and use mine .Many silhouette matches and a bunch of deer. It's an impressive gun and cartridge !! No need to load it HOT , treat it nicely .it has still taken deer about 250 lbs ,one shot kills at 50 yds [no scope or rest ! ]
