.40 S&W - 180gr lead bullets and WSF
I can't find any data for this combo. I found data on Hodgdon's site for a 180gr Hornady XTP jacketed HP. For WSF, they list a start charge of 5.4 and a max of 5.8
For the use of a lead bullet, am I safe dropping .5gr to start, i.e. using a start charge of 4.9gr and a max of 5.3gr? |

I don't have that powder and can't comment with experience, but I often run in to the same problem finding data for Alliant Power Pistol. It's apparently a very good powder for high octane jacketed rounds and not a "likely" choice for lead, but I still use it, and to great effect.
I would e-mail Hodgdon and ask for help. Worst they can do is ignore you. Anyhow... I feel your pain!

After looking at the Lyman book for 180 grain JHP, I would say yes.
For WSF it shows the charge as 5.0 gr to 6.2 gr. For lead I would say, start at 5.0 gr WSF and not exceed 5.5 gr of WSF. Since fps is under 1100 no need to worry about leading. Jim |

@jim243
Is 1100 fps pretty much a top limit for typical cast bullets and leading issues? or does a harder alloy allow higher velocities?

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll drop down .5 to start. I need to hit 917fps consistently to make major power factor so we'll see what powder charge it takes to do that.
