shot a calf elk with a sporter K98 this last season. it was a quartering shot facing me. went in the front shoulder and exited the rear hip. went clean through and dropped her like a 10 ton sack of dookie. 175 grn sierra game king over IMR 4064. 8mm mauser has my vote all the way. ive also shot about 9 wild Californian hogs with my original K98 all of them except 1 were 1 shot kills. this next year im going to give my mosin a go at a deer or elk.

That shouldn't be to difficult. According to this web site, http://207.36.233.89/shooting2006/sw...ing1/index.asp , they use a normal 7.62/.308 bullet.

Quote:
On the 7.5 X 55 bullet front, it’s all good news. The 7.5 X 55 Swiss round uses a “standard size” (standard size for the US and 7.62 NATO rounds) .308 (.30 caliber) diameter bullets. Readily available jacketed; or cast bullets from standard molds are the ticket for this cartridge.
This is an excerpt from that page linked above.

1903A3 would be my choice. Best sights, light, handy, not too many game animals in NA can carry a 180gr .30-06 bullet very far. Might carry a .22 revolver in case we were charged by a coastal brown bear so I could kneecap the guide.

You won't find ammo at Wal-Mart, but it isn't exactly difficult to find.

You can get excellent Norma ammo for the K31 with ease (I didn't say cheap!).

Hard to resist the Mauser considering Sellior & Bellot 8mm SPs are $18/box.....

I did 8x57 Mauser for a couple years. Using 196gr S&B cartridges, I didn't think that there was anything it couldn't stop, although I'm not a bear hunter.
Oh yeah, the 196s are TANKS.

My favorite 8mm round is the discontinued Norma 165 gr Vulcan Point (hollow point) at 2855 fps. Too bad they are so rare now...almost too precious to shoot. But the 8mm loves 196 gr bullets anyway, so no biggie.

Lots of very good choices. I'll add to the votes for the 6.5x55 Swede and 8mm Mauser

Uggh I'm torn on this issue

I have 2 Mosins (m44, 91-30) and a 1891 Argentine Mauser. I would feel comfortable hunting any thing 800 lbs or less with any of them reguardless of the ammo.

Never fired any 6.5, or 7.62x51 (308), or 303's so Idk about them.

Well I guess I will sleep with a chainsaw next to my bed. Not the same as a gun but I figure the sound of it revving up will be as effective as a pump shot gun being cycled.

Why do you say that? I think a M44 or M38 would also make a fine hunting rifle, assuming the accuracy was there, for the same reasons as the Enfield Jungle Carbine. Reasonably light, handy rifle, potent cartridge.

Granted, the sights kind of suck......

Out of my collection my 1903 A3 would be my choice. But any of them would work fine. I can hit well with my Yugo 24 47 too.

Why Mil-Surp Specifically?

Is this question born of curiousity, necessity or Mil-Surp lust?

You can find mil-surp in a lot of flavors. 6.5X55, 7X57, and 8X57 Mauser, .303 Brit in a bunch of different Enfields, .30-06 in '03 Springfield, M-17 Enfield, M1 Garand and 1941 Johnson rifles, .30-40 Krag, .308, 7.62X54R, even 7.62X39 though that would be a bit light for the bigger game animals. Pick the chambering yoiu want and get a rifle to shoot it with. The .30-06 has been around for over a century and has taken just about everything in NA and most of the others have as well.

IMO, those three are the best of the best (outside of the 30-06)

Sleeper: FN Model 1949, in any of three calibers: 7x57, 8x57, or .30-06

(1) Not an assault rifle by any definitions anywhere in the USA. It's even California legal AFAIK.

(2) Excellent quality and accuracy.

(3): Predecessor mechanically of the later FN-FAL.

7mm ones are typically FN Manufactured and were South American issue, meaning GORGEOUS wood. The Argentine Army might suck at fighting, but their Italian heritage means that they bought guns that looked great on the parade ground ...

8mm ones are typically NOT made by FN in Belgium, but were made in Egypt under license. More common... functional... <but> 'Made in Egypt'

.30-06 ones are usually either Belgian or Luxembourg army surplus. ABL markings on them = Belgium. Wonderful rifles. All were made by Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Herstal, Belgium.

Always a favorite.

Any of the WWI/WWII cartridges will do fine. The exception is charging grizzly, that's .45-70 territory.
Well ................................ I might take exception on carbines like the M1 Carbine as well as the M1 Thompson and and M2 Grease gun submachine guns, but as far as battle rifles go, you're probably right.

My $.02 worth

I hunt white tail deer in Ky. I only use milsurp rifles. I have 2 Mosins and an Argentine Mauser 7.65x53. Something nostalgic about firing a bolt action rifle that was carried by people for over 70+ years. I find it enjoyable and seldom finish Deer season hungry!

I had to give up hunting a few years ago but, if I could go again and if I could get the ammunition , my Arisaka in 7.7Jap would be an interesting choice. It's about as close to being a "tack driver" as any. The only real problem is if you can find ammo, it cost an arm and a foot.
