The Impossible Question to answer for most...

It's a toss-up between a pair of P226s...I shoot the 9mm better, but the .40 in Equinox trim is prettier. Both fit my hand just right.

Zebulon--- your right, most of us sometimes struggle with our .45 1911zzz. I've been shooting one since 1966, & frequently get in over my head, still love to keep trying.

Not impossible just sooo many...

response to choose from: e.g. S&W m39-2, Colt Combat Commander, BHP, J-frame (for discreet carry), 4" .357Mag (for hiking).

I guess I'll be the first to say it, Glock 17. Ive carried it for years, and I shoot it better than any other platform. Its OD Green and has a custom adjustable fulcrum trigger. Stock trigger was the only thing I didnt like about it so I changed it. I like 1911's but Im a capacity guy. I carry a 20rnd mag and 2 20rnd spares for a total of 60rnds.

Easy answer.

After 50+ years of buying, selling, shooting and owning over 300 firearms, the BHP is my favorite "auto pistol". Specifically, in the current Mk III configuration. Wheelgun? My current S&W 4" 10 shot 617. Well over 25,000 rounds and still shooting dime size DA groups. Never owned a K-22, M-17 or M-18 that could touch it for DA work.

Thus far, the 1911. I realize that it's more a category of pistols, rather than a specific model, but there are too many of those that I like to narrow it beyond that. I like the look, the feel, the trigger, the history . . .

However, there are many, many pistols which I have never fired, but which I find very appealing. I will not rule out the possibility that one of them might displace the 1911 one day.

Like many folks here, I have owned and maybe still own a bunch - Sig, Glock, Hk, CZ, S&W, Colt, Browning, Kimber, Wilson, Walther, SA, Kahr, Ruger, Beretta, and others - but the winner is:

My Ed Brown Kobra. Everybody shoots dead nuts on with my Ed Brown. My old Gold Cup is damn close though I still prefer the Kobra.

A third runner up is my Israeli surplus BHP that looks like holy hell but is scary accurate even with its beat up sights. This thing is just point and click good.

I appreciate the nods to the P239 and the XD45, which are two dear to my heart faves. My XD45 is the longest residing handgun in my safe for a good reason.

5 inch 1911. Nothing really comes close. Great balance, ergonomics, power, trigger, history, and to top it off, it's beautiful.
What he said...no contest.

Great pistols above, but my favorite is a G17 because after many guns it's just the best. . . . for me.

1911 and Hi-Power

After 10 years I am split between any 1911 and my Browning hi-power. John Moses Browning just did them right ya know?

As for me when grabbing a pistol to put on the belt on the way out the door, even though I have Sig's, HK's, Glocks, Springfield XD's, as well as several others, I seem to go with a 1911 or a B.H.P.

I'm afraid sometimes it's a Combat Commander in .45, sometimes a .38 Combat Masterpiece. Every now and then, a 4 inch Model 10. But the gun I have with me all the time is a Bulgarian Makarov.

From a practical standpoint... Glock 27.
It can adequately adapt to nearly any roll, and even other calibers.

I'd have to say my CZ 97b.

The way it's configured now, the pistol is similar to a 1911 in operation but has a double stack mag and with the Nill grips has amazing ergonomics.

I wasn't always a SAO fan but having the same crisp trigger pull first to last is a real advantage.

I'd have to say the gun that beat all others when it was made- a Glock!

The one I shoot the most is a Kimber. Second would be the ruger mkI target. Third would be the colt woodsman.

I'm with Spats McGee -- love the 1911s but it would be hard to pick a particular one. The one I carry the most is the Dan Wesson CCO because it is heck of a gun and built for carry -- night sights, aluminum alloy frame, shortened grip frame, rounded butt, and 4.25 inch barrel.

For me it is a dead even heat between Glock 22 and Glock 17. I shoot either one fast and can get good groups. Have tried many over the last 25 years but the full size gocks are just natural for me.

It must be all the eastern block blood in me.

I've not found a gun I enjoy more than my Springfield TRP. It's a classic 5", all steel 1911.

No better handgun exists for me.

It really is hard to say. My frst thought was to ask for qualifications, like "favorite shooter," or "favorite carry," or other, but WTH, make a choice, right?

Here it is - reliable, comfortable, parts-available:

Favorite....

1973... I traded a Japanese sword to my gunsmith, Mikio Sano (passed away in 2006) for a 1911 he put together. He studied and I think perfected some of Armand Swenson's early ideas. It has a S&W K frame rear sight (cerainly not now the best choice) and a plain ramp front sight, custom barrel contour and bushing (tight as anything can be) NM barrel, a trigger that breaks like glass. It is the most reliable 1911 I have ever owned (and I have had more than 20). It is the most accurate, also. After 40 years it is no longer the "prettiest" to others (to me it is gorgeous). I no longer carry for business reasons; but if I am heading out to do battle or confront a bump in the night...this is the pistol that will be on my hip or in my hand. It saved my life before and I know it would again if the need arose. Bet you can guess what is my favorite!
