Firestar M40 Extractor - OH

I know this is a long shot, but...
I am looking for an extractor for a M40 Firestar.
This gun has run flawlessly for over 20 years, now having problems with failure to extract.
Took it apart and the extractor is badly worn.
No luck finding one anywhere.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

I recall reading that Numrich and/or Sarco ended up with a bunch of Star parts. Would be worth giving them a call.

A flat piece of steel, some files and a lot of patience.

That's how we do things at gunsmithing school. I had to make a hand for a Colt Official Police. Still trying to fit it. Also made a center pin for a S&W Victory revolver. Then there's the Norinco clone of the Browning 22 that needed replacement plungers and springs that I made. Some other guys made springs for the Colt SAA and yet another is working on rebuilding a SAA hammer.

Be sure to polish it, turn it cherry red, quench in oil, repolish and then temper it.

ETA: Finally fitted the hand today. Yipeee!

Yeah, an external extractor is a fairly simple shape to reproduce.
Start with the hole for the pin, that holds it in the slide, and go from there.
It will also require hardening.
Not a complicated thing, either.

G. willikers makes a good point about starting with the hole.

1) Get plate that is the same diameter as the extractor. Lay it out with dykem.
2) Drill the hole. Everything you do from this point on will be measured off that hole.
3) You can use a belt sander for heavy removal but always resort to the hand file for small jobs. If there's a spring & plunger for extractor tension, drill that hole second. Make sure the plunger fits into it. Now do the rest of the outline.
4) Go slow on the extractor hook.

Get dummy cartridges to test extraction.

I saw the same thing about Sarco, but they didn't list that model on their website. Worth a call to check though, IMO.

I know someone who can make you one, he has made several over the past couple of years. But it is at straight machine time rate, so it will cost over $150 by the time it's done.

No need for machining as it can be done with handtools. Just find a piece of tool steel that is the same width and file and drill to fit. It must be hardened afterwards.
