I'm sold on the MN 44: Now what?

Hi
I really like my 44. 100 bucks, built like a tank, cute, and, has a bayonet. Cheap ammo, great action, if crude.

Trigger is liveable.

Now, what other C&R guns can I get that are a great value, compared to the regular rifle market?

When they start getting around 300-400 dollars, I start thinking new 308, etc.

welcome to the club!

If you like the M-N, then try to find a Mauser 8mm.
8mm ammo isn't as cheap as it was a year ago, but has excellent reloading potential.
M48, M24, K98, M93--the M93 weighs the most, therefore perceived recoil will be less

My second recommendation is a Swedish M38 or M96 in the most excellent 6.5x55. Accurate as heck, light-recoiling, excellent reloading potential, & hard-hitting. Excellent N. American hunting cartridge as well

Every shooter should own an SKS !! Avoid the ungainly Yugoslav SK's with the useless grenade launcher if possible

Pick up a Swiss K-31 while they're still available. From what I've heard (and I need to follow my own advice on this one) they're tack drivers just as they come.

And while you're still hot on the MNs find a 91/59; they look like the M38s but are - from what I've read - arsenal cut down 91/30s and darned good shooters in their own right.

Looked VERY good.

Actually they ALL look pretty good to me.

I've got the Mosin M44. Looks like ammo for the Swede and 8mm aren't too bad. I have a sneaking suspicion a Swede gun for 200-300 dollars is going to be a tack driver, and, an 8mm Mauser, made in CZ's plant gets me going to.

So many guns, so little time, and money...

The K-31's 7.5x55 is a bid more expensive than 6.5x55, but not much.

Accuracy-wise, they're about the same [K-31 & M38]. All Swiss military 7.5x55 ammo is match-grade.

heads-up on the M38 that you linked above, it appears that the lower priced ones have cracked stocks. That looks like good deal. I want one of those M38s now, but can't afford it

accuracy-wise in no particular order:

K31 Swiss Schmidt Rubin
M96 Swede Mauser
03A3 Springfield
M39 Finn Mosin
K98 German Mauser (early)
M48-M24/47 Yugo, Czech Mauser

the above rifles aren't 'specialty' milsurp, either
sniper versions are available for significantly more than their standard infantry versions that i listed

did i forget to list any other good ones?

Okay I will add two cent worth while averyone else is.
There are still several good deals around but not like it use to be, years ago you could buy six pack deals and get some real nice examples because of it. Now you need to shop wiser and only buy what you like the best or what you think you would want to keep as a collector instead of disposing some to purchase others.
I have enjoyed several different C&R guns but would say the Swede M96 is about the most accurate and enjoyable rifle to shoot out of most all I have had the honor of having.
Enjoy what you are doing and buy what you enjoy the most.

Have a 91/59, less felt recoil than my M1903A3 but packs almost as much of a whallup. Accurate too. Trigger isn't too horrendous but it was intended as a battle rifle not a long range comp race gun or some such. Knocks deer down on impact. But that mighta been the shockwave from the powder

I love my M44. Fire, insane muzzle blast,shoots suprisingly well. I just got done bedding it w/ JB Weld. I got instructions off www.Box O' Truth.com I figured it cant hurt and I have $7 into it. I havent shot it yet to see if it made a difference but am anxiously awaiting the damn rain to quit. I am C&R hooked now.

Considering the source, I'm confident the gun is worth it.

Total agreement however a warning on the M-96 Swede and the K-31

Reloading for them is trick. Even tho your COAL. READS "correct", the bullet's presence in the leade is read by the rifle and if it it too close, the rifle will not permit a fire.

You then hafta pull all your bullets and re-seat them a scoche deeper till you get the COAL the rifle demands [ even tho your original COL might'a been a bit short]. It has to do with geometry of the bullet.

The Swiss for example 'preciates a strongly tapered bullet that is hard to acquire commercially here. and certainly not cast (dammit!)

What's wrong with Yugo SKS's? I got one and love it. I have heard some of the stories, but I haven't had one problem with mine. Not even one FTF,FTE,FTF.

I do agree with the first sentence. They are an awesome weapon.
