Was the M37 ever factory..

nickle-plated?

Surprise that the aluminum frame could be nickled???

Aluminum can be plated with nickel, with the proper undercoat.

Yes, according to SCOS&W.

A friend of mine had one NIB in the 70s that was inherited, but about 3-4 boxes of "+p" ammo took care of it.

They used to offer the 442 with a brushed, satin-nickle option. A friend of mine has one and it has held up well for years.

Yes, I had a Nickel Model 37 back in the 70's.
It was available with a round or square butt.
The nickel was shiny.
Back in the 70's & 80's, there were shiny nickel 36's, 37's, 38's and 49's.
I still have a 49 like that that I bought in 1984.
My 442 bought in 1994 is in electroless (dull) nickel.
