Pro-Shot action cleaning tool

I bought a Pro-Shot action cleaning tool. It has these swabs that look like simple pieces of cotton rope. Why can't I just use cotton rope? The Pro-shot ones are about 250 for a little bag, and I'm a cheap bastage!

I don't see a reason why not. Years ago my SKS came with a cleaning rope although I still have not used it but it would work for troops in the field. My suggestion would be to go buy some rope of the same size and try it. If it works your problem is solved.

I tried the tool. It has one rod for the brush and another that is for inside the action, not the lugs. I found that the rope was stupid on an AR (Maybe a bolt would be different) it just falls out. Two 12ga shotgun patches through the hole worked great.

On another note, I used CLP for the first time, just to lube the action. I didn't think I put too much on, just hit the wear points. I fired 120 rounds with one rapid fire muti mag shoot. That stuff migrated all over the entire action. The bolt and carrier were well covered. Now I see why they use that in the military. FP-10 didn't do that.

If you want a good lube go with a very thin coating of White Lithium Grease. I too tried CLP and was disappointed. When I bought my AR from American Spirit Arms I asked them what the lube was that came from the factory. They gave me some brand name but told me it was White Lithium and you can buy that cheaply at Auto Zone.

I don't like any kind of grease in my AR. Grease can collect grit and can quickly become abrasive. The best gun lube I've ever found is simple Mobil 1 synthetic. And a quart of Mobil 1 will last you a long time.

Interesting I never would have thought of that. I just went with the lithium because the gunmaker suggested it and I don't get a build-up with it. I even use it on my Savage .22 and I get a lot less gunk and can shoot more without cleaning.

Maybe I'm off base, but carbon from the direct impingement system mixed with grease would seem to make a lapping compound. Since lithium grease is actually petroleum with lithium as a thickener it would seem to me that the grease, carbon and heat from rapid fire would make asphalt, just like in a muzzle loader that is using petroleum lubricants.

If you use a very thin film of the white lithium you don't get that problem. I use a flux brush to apply it and a little goes a long way.
