Bibles
Which are good books on gunsmithing. I dont intened to do more than learn to mount a scope but I want greater knowledge and I love to learn so a bible of gunsmithing would work great.

There are so many books on Gunsmithing that it would be next to impossible to recommend just one as a "Bible" on Gunsmithing. Here's a few from my collection that I've collected over the years:
Gunsmithing Tips and Projects by Wolfe PublishingMore modern books would include: Gunsmithing Rifles by SweeneyJerry Kuhnhausen has several manuals out that include Ruger Single Action Revolvers plus shop manuals on S&W Revolvers, The Colt .45 automatic, Colt Double Action Revolvers, Ruger Double Action Revolvers plus more on long guns too. I found most of my early books at used book stores and had a lot of fun doing so. There are quite a few on line sites that offer these books too. Good luck in your search for "the" Gunsmithing book. Mike

The Modern Gunsmith Vol 1 and 2 by Howe
Advanced Gunsmithing by W.F. Vickery Without a doubt the two are the "BIBLES" on gunsmithing.

The Gunsmithing books by Patrick Sweeney are very good.
Also, Midway USA has some good gunsmithing videos on www.youtube.com |

As exemplified by the previous recommendations, gun bibles come in two varieties: General purpose and model specific. Both types are obsolete as soon as they are published. New models and cutting edge accessories won't be shown in either variety. However, tasks like stock fitting and finishing are virtually timeless. The model specific books are probably much more detailed than needed for your purposes. With the internet, you have access to up to date information on countless subjects.
For your library, I recommend one, or more, of the general purpose bibles. If you want an up-to-date answer to a specific question, then do an internet search: "How to mount a scope on a ____________" Also, with the internet you have more than one opinion on any given subject. It's always nice to have a consensus before you do something significant to your favorite arm. |
