Blackening SS revolvers
I am not sure if this should be here or in Smithing.
I would like to finish my SS revolver in black chrome. I can easily polish and have my powder coater spray a candy (semi transparent) black over top. The problem I have with that is that I dont feel it will hold up. Does anyone know of a product that will hold up on firearms. This is the look im going for: http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&sourc...68277931285240

Brownell's sells (or used to) a product for blackening stainless steel. It is very much like a blueing process. Contact them for info. If you don't want to buy the whole set-up they may be able to point you to someone who does this work.

Melonite, like Glock's Tenifer, is not a finish. It is a surface hardening process that imparts no color whatsoever to the steel.

The title is a bit misleading. I dont want to make the revolver black, like a blued pistol or a painted pistol. I actually want it to look like black chrome. Highly polished and reflective. More like tinted glass.

Black chrome is your only viable option. Plating stainless is not impossible, but it is more difficult than plating carbon steel.

There is a black version of industrial hard chrome, which is the chrome used in firearms' finishes. I don't know if it can be done over a polished finish. Black nickel is also an option. Neither is as durable as their "white" counterparts.

Give S&W a call and see what they use on their M&P slides since those are stainless with a black finish.

That's black oxide and not a gloss finish.

Black chrome is about the only option for a gloss finish.
Brownell's stainless steel bluing can be finished with a brilliant gloss polish under the bluing, but the look is more a dark gray then a blue-black. There are problems with application and apparently durability, so many of the companies doing it have stopped offering it. Black chrome is not very durable, only slightly more so then bright nickel. APW-Cogan offers it, but only in a matte finish. Coal Creek offers their QPQ Melonite which is a jet black. They used to say it could be done in a mirror polish. http://www.coalcreekarmory.com/gunsmith-shop-prices/ |
