Remington advertises a 55gr. Accelerator in 30-06. I was thinking of trying it for coyotes, bobcat, etc. Has anyone tryed it or know where to get it?

If it's current advertising, then it's not out of production like I had thought it was.

I was given a couple of boxes of Accelerators, some years back. My rifle usually shoots inside one MOA. With the Accelerators, I was lucky to stay inside 3 MOA. You might be luckier than I was. At any rate, I wouldn't use them on anything over 100 yards off.

I always had good accuracy with 110-grain bullets as varmint loads, although it's been a number of years since I used my '06 on varmints.

Not an option for furbearers. If you wanna eradicate some pests, they'll be fine. But if you're shopping for skins, find something a little less "damaging." I saw a picture of my uncles first, and last coyote taken with some 30-06 accelorators he had. It was literally ripped in half in front of the backlegs. The backbone was all that held this thing together.

I used the accelerators on coyotes and fox in South Dakota and Montana back in the late 80's. I probably still have 2-3 boxes somewhere. Seems they didn't group as tight as I would have liked, but they weren't spraying all over the place either. Most shots were under 200 yards, probably majority in the 75-100 yard range after coming in to calls. Didn't damage the pelts that much as I recall.

No saboted centerfire round that I've seen seems to group well, whether it's Accelerators or handloaded sabot. Get a 22/250 or just stick to the 125 grain SP loadings in the /06.

Hey nedfig, Art's and Poodleshooter's posts reminded me of a plinking Load I used at one time.

I was using a 110gr RNSP bullet in a 300Sav just to get some trigger-time with that rifle and I seem to remember I was getting around 2" groups at 100yds with IMR-4064.

A buddy got curious about what I was shooting and asked to try some out. After shooting a few, he decided to load some for his 30-06. He used the same bulk 110gr RNSPs in his 30-06 with IMR-4064. I'd not bet money on it, but I think he was getting 1.5" groups at 100yds with it after a bit of playing with the load.

I do remember we were paying $4/100 for those bulk 110gr bullets back then at the Gun Shows, so I would guess that was 10-12 years ago. He still loads them as far as I know.

I don't know anyone personally who has shot the Accelerators, so I can't help you there.

Good hunting and clean 1-shot kills, Hot Core

Yeah, loading that Plinker bullet to around 2,000 ft/sec to 2,500 ft/sec will definitely put a bunch of hurt on small critters. Reasonably accurate, and zilch for recoil.

Using a 150 gr milspec fmj on furbearers is more than enough juice to get the job done and has better ballistics than those 110 gr bullets. You still have to place your shots carefully. Most animals up to the size of a coyote don't have enough mass to expand a standard soft point bullet, Then again, a 165 gr sierra boat tail will vaporize a badger.

I think the twist in most '06 barrels is not conducive to anything less than 125 gr. IIRC. I have shot 110 grainers at coyotes with success, but it took a lot of effort to zero it in and I had perfect weather - no wind, stable rest. The head shot was magnifique! Until I really have to time to work up a handload I'll stick to the 150 ballistic tips because I can get sub-MOA out to 200 yrds and head shots are the best way not to ruin to much fur.

I really would rather have a .22-250 for varmints than my beloved '06. At least I'd have longer, flatter range for some of those pesky critters.

Aw, c'mon, ER--ya call ol' Wiley in close enough, you can head-shoot him with a .22 rimfire! But I've never had trouble with group-size with the 110-grain bullets; I guess it's "the twist thing".

Dr. Rob, I've come to believe the Sierra 150- and 165-grain boat-tails must have rather thin jackets. You may have read my comments about no exit on a mule deer's neck with the 150. I once shot a doe with the 165-grain (60 yards, +/-) and you could stick your fist into the exit wound.

I shot a coyote while deer hunting with the trusty 165 gr Game-King, sheesh what a mess that made of Ole Wiley, Beep-Beeped him for good.

I don't believe HandloaderJon has seen my ".338 Win Mag VS. Coyote" Picture. You think yours made a mess. I almost died when I saw what the 250gr did!!

It seems there was some unseen controversy last time I posted it though....are we men, or are we mice??

Heck, that looks like you shot him twice! Neck and heart both! Tough coyote? Ya oughta get sumpn with enough punch to take him out with one shot. You know, .243 or suchlike.

Some of you might recall this story from other posts: The absolutely most destructive load I've ever seen was my uncle's load of an 80-grain .32-20 bullet, swaged down to 30-caliber and laoded into an '06 ahead of a lot of 3031. I'd guesstimate a muzzle velocity close to 3,800 or so.

On coyote-sized stuff, or on down to jackrabbits and suchlike, it's sorta like using a hand grenade. It makes bodily parts go all whichaways. Do not, repeat, do not, shoot overhead into a buzzard. I did. but I was 16 at the time; fortunately I was not only agile, but speedy--and that day, I had incentive.

Try some of the Speer 125 gr TNT hollow points. They are very accurate and quite explosive when they land. You can buy them in bulk too. I load them with 53.0 gr of IMR 4064.
