Powder, primer, bullets?

I guess, being new to reloading, I'll have to ask this -- but I think there is the likelihood this may be one of those "religious" questions.

I would like to load match grade (high accuracy) .223 rounds and self-defence .45ACP rounds. My rifle is a 1:9 twist AR15 and the pistol a government 1911.

What can you recommend for powder, bullet, and primer for each of these?

223:

Either RE15 or Varget, 205M's, winny brass, and 60-69 grain bullets.

ACP:

I use Red dot and 230 Ranier's for practice rounds. For defense I stick to factory. I am ascared of lawyers.

And primers?

And which primers are good for .45 -- CGI 300's or 350's, or another brand?

I've used both CCI 300s and 350s; the 300s should be fine for most .45 ACP loads. Save your 350s for magnum loads and slower burning powders like H110 and WW296. I've shot literally thousands of CCI primers and never had one not go bang.

Might try 25.0 grs AA2230 powder in Winchester brass under almost any 55 gr bullet. All of my ARs shioot this load under .5 inch at 100 yds. And I have the 1:10", 1:9", and 1:8" twist DPMS ARs. The load seems to work on every AR I've tried it in. It also shoots in my brothers ARs and all of the folks that have tried it at the shooting range. Just because it is a fast twist doesn't mean it won't shoot the lighter bullets. Frankly, I've had better luck with all of mine with the 55 gr bullets rather than the recommended 60+gr pills. Primers are Winchester Small rifle.

You need a good reloading manual or two to use for getting good, safe, loads.

If you are going for match accuracy with that 1:9 .223 --Barnes, Sierra, or custom made 62 to 73 grain boat tails for ranges beyond 300 yards. I like H-335 for those but Vht has excellent match grade powders that many people prefer. I found no improvement myself, and the H335 is easier to get here. A flat based bullet of similar weight might do better for you at closer ranges.

I don't carry a .45 so I can't speak from personal experience about that caliber, but I lot of people use Hornady XTPs, Speer Gold dots or Nosler HP bullets for personal defense. I've been using the xtps in .32 HRM load and the 9mm. Recently I had the chance to see the bullet's terminal performance in wet telephone books. I'm staying with the XTP in the .32 unless Nosler or Sierra start making a 100 grain HP for it. I'm going with Nosler powder jackets in the 9mm. I like Nosler tourney master in my .45s but as I said they are not carry guns.
