SP of SPM for .357mag with AA#9
Do I need to use a mag primer in a .357mag load with AA#9 powder under a 158grain jacketed HP. All of the load data seems to indicate a SPM primer, but I can't seem to find any. Have WSP primers, but don't want to load it if it won't work well.

296
aa#9 , 296 , h-110 are all ball powders & likes magnum primers , you can get satisfactory results with regular primers .
when shootin em probably the only way to tell the difference would be using a chronograph. don`t go below published data. some WSP say on the box for standard or magnum loads????? GP100man Last edited by GP100man; July 25, 2009 at 01:07 PM. Reason: add on |

I have some older Accurate data that lists CCI 500 primers for .357 mag. I have had very good results using WSP and CCI 500 with AA#9 behind 158 and 180gr jacketed bullets. When I began using AA#9 I worked from the starting loads for 158 jhp w/CCI 500 and soon had over pressure signs at 25% of the load spread, the flattened cratered primers and stuck cases were gone at 50% My current loading for the 158 XTPhp are about 75% and for the 180 XTP are at 90% in a Ruger Sec. Six w/a 2.75" barrel.

The question is now mute, Grafs came through with a backordered case of CCI SP mag primers along with 2 cases of regular CCI SP and CCI LP primers, should have them on Thursday. Been waiting for CCI's since March!

Any handgun load over 10gr automatically gets a magnum primer.
