T/C Encore

I'm looking at a Encore pistol and I'm having trouble deciding on a caliber. Im looking at the 15in stainless barrels and I'm stuck between 308 and 223. Which would you pick and why?

What do you plan on shooting with the Encore? If your plans are deer and larger game, then the .308, for varmints, the .223. If you only plan on shooting paper, then either one will work very well.

I have them both. I am supposing that when you say "caliber", you mean "cartridge" and that you are stuck between the .223 Remington and the .308 Winchester as they are the most common(Encore barrels can be had in at least 20 different .223"-.224" chamberings an as many .308").
For hunting, the 15" Encore in .308 Win makes a very nice carbine like package that is easy to carry and powerful enough for many types of hunting. A good deer load uses 130-135 grain bullets. Recoil increases significantly when jumping to 150 grain and heavier bullets.
The .223 Remington in an Encore is a neat little package, what recoil there is is almost entirely absorbed by the weight of the gun. Very accurate and can be made for you with twist rates as fast as 1-7, allowing the use of heavier bullets.
If you intend to do a lot of offhand target shooting, the .223 Rem is the way to go....a rifle scope allows for a close to the eye and body hold without fear of the gun smacking you in recoil.

I'll agree with darkgael on this one. Unless you are serious about hunting with a pistol AND are accustomed to the recoil, the .308 won't be your best choice. Not to mention the fact that .223 ammo is way cheaper.

Split the difference and go 243. Although I did a lot of shooting with a Savage Striker in .308. If you roll your own you can load some dandy light recoiling varmint loads in the 308.

If you go with the Encore I can give you all my loads. They all shoot 1/2' groups @ 100 yards. 125 grain Sierra Pro hunter# 2120 /.125 gr.Sierra flat nose # 2020 its a 30-30 bullet that works great on white Tails.

One shot kills . I also shoot a 150 Grain Sierra Match King in my T/C Venture that I will try out in my Hand gun soon. My loads have been developed and proven; so much so that my buddy bought the same gun and shoot my loads, exact shooting skills and he also shoot 1/2" @ 100 yards off sand bags and bench of course. Let me know if you want the Data I'll be more than happy to pass them on to you. Flat shooting and all you"ll ever need for up too 200 yards. Thats as far as I can shoot here in N.Y . No wide open places beyond that here.

Shooting the .308 with 125gr. bullets the recoil isnt bad at all. and it's a Very fast load {2800] FPS for a hand gun. I used and Chrono for all my developing. Once fire formed & loading your own it will out shoot any factory hand down.

I have an Encore Pro Hunter 15" in 7mm-08. It's my favorite gun from a "giggles perspective".

Recoil is about the same as a typical, very max load 44mag.

Mine is topped with a 3-12x Burris. Great scope, only need 12x for range work or very specific hunting conditions. Typically, 7 would be plenty.

As for your choice, it will depend on what's on the receiving end.

I shoot a Contender and my 14 inch 223 is one of my favorite barrels.
Very accurate with minimal recoil.

Depends on your use for it, if you go with a 223 why not go with a Contender and save some weight?
