any idea on velocity of this 40 S&W load

I am working up some loads with w231 and 155 grain cast bullets for my .40 S&W. Its probably me, but I have found that 5.0 grains seems not too accurate. Dropping back to 4.5 is a lot better for me. Also, trying to load something my wife can handle. My question is, does anyone have any idea what this loads FPS is out of a S&W Sigma? Would this be an acceptable round, if you HAD to use it for SD? I also have some 155 grain XTP's , but obviously they are a bit pricey fro practice, I have been loading those at 5.5 Grains, thinking about trying 5.0

Do you get noticible barrel leading with the higher charge? I shoot a 40 but I prefer heavier bullets and I cast my own 175 grain bullets. I have fewer problems than with lighter bullets and they are very accurate. Regarding SD: anything is better than nothing. If you are pumping off a rapid volley of 40 call bullets you will not be in bad shape. I hope you never have to do it.

I get little , if any leading. I use black coated bullets from precision, and cast I pick up locally, neither lead noticeably. Ive loaded 155 & 180's from 5-6 Grains of Unique, and 4.5-5.0 231. I also shoot cast from our 38's and 357. Thye lead very little, even with fairly hot 357 loads. However, my wife likes those swaged lswchp's from hornandy, and they lead pretty bad, as does almost anything I shoot out of her Judge.

Does she shoot in-line buckshot out of the judge?

She shoots 45 colts we load, as well as the federal 000 buckshot. Mostly the 45's though

By the way, what do you think is better for a low recoil round, the 155's or 180?

Kind of hard to answer that one, how hot are the lighter bullet loads. F=MA so you have both a change in mass and a different acceleration. If all were equal except bullet weight the heavier bullet will have more felt recoil. In my Accurate #7 loads I use a couple tenths over min and get reliable cycling in the action. They don't seem like stout loads to me but I'm not that sensitive to recoil on the hand or shoulder if shooting a rifle.

The issue isnt that the recoils bothers me, it just seems to be hurting my acuuarcy, so I figure it has to be me, I dont have any problems with stout loads from revolvers, its just that auto......
