Help picking a new 9MM
I am thinking of getting a new 9MM, All my pistols are 1911 because I like the smooth triggers but not that many 9s in 1911, I have ben looking at USP compact Sig and maybe Berreta, What do you think?

sig sauer and cz also make fantastic 9mm's. the sig srt (short reset trigger) will give you a shorter pull like you are used to with 1911's. cz's custom line will also get you a nice crisp short pull, but it will cost you around $1200 even if you can find them.

You might want to look at the Springfield EMP 9mm 1911.

I suggest you look at the cZ line up. They have great ergonomics and are available in several models inculding traditional SA/DA and decocker triggers as well as steel and aluminum frames. Visit www.czusa.com.

My Beretta 92FS Inox remains my favorite full sized 9mm.
It has to be one of the most comfortable 9mm guns to shoot IMO. Well made never had any misfunction, might want to give it a look. |

You need a CZ 75. Having been a 1911 guy for decades, the CZ is the WunderNine that makes the transition the easiest. I carry mine cocked and locked just like my 1911s.
Now, you need to understand that the CZ has a pretty bad trigger as they come from the factory, like a lot of 1911s I have owned. Fortunately, it is a lot easier to perform a trigger job on a CZ than it is a 1911. With parts from Cajun Gun Works, you can make a CZ trigger feel like an Ed Brown in single action mode. |

There are a ton of great 9MM pistols out there and you mention some terrific ones. Be sure to check out the Walther PPQ also with its remarkable trigger and ergos.
I don't own a Beretta 92 - yet. But it is hard walking away from them now that my LGS has them for $499 after $50 off rebate. Though they may not have any left now As always it is best to try some out and find what works best for you. I have tried just about every commonly available 9MM pistol out there and for me SIGs and Walther work the best for me. Good luck! |

What model is that Sig in the picture, and how many rounds does it hold?

If you can find a Beretta Combat, they are an excellent version of the 92fs
Can't go wrong with a Sig though The Walther PPQ is a great choice as well, best trigger I've tried on a polymer handgun. BHP is a nice choice as well. CZ SP01 Shadow is a great choice with a steel frame a smooth trigger they are great shooters. HK's I prefer the target versions like the Match, Elite or Expert |

The P229 is a little bit more compact and uses 15 round flush fit magazines in 9MM. For about half the price you can get a SIG SP2022 which has a poly frame but is also a terrific pistol and holds 15 rounds. YES a SIG pistol for under $500!! Here is one of my P229s and my SP2022. Here is a picture of the best 9mm for me. If you compare this picture with other pictures in this thread, you may note that this particular pistol will sit lower in the hand than any of the others, with the possible exception of the Walther. The ergonomic impact of this is that your followup recovery time will be faster than for any of the others because (a) muzzle flip will be less, and (b) felt recoil will be less. Even if the Walther does sit as low in the hand, it is plastic, so the felt recoil will be greater.

FALPhil,
Sweet!!! A friend of mine at the range picked up a used one at the LGS and let me try it. Really nice. I am not sure if it is the same model. The gun he had was a CZ75D. I think it has been replaced by the CZ75 Compact. Either way, if I saw one in the shop, I would buy it. Really nice feel to it and a steel frame. Really nice gun.

For the OP:
I agree with the idea of going to a 9mm 1911 if you like 1911s so much. UNLESS you are after more carrying capacity. All three of the companies you list make good pistols in 9mm. I could pile on with other 9mm recommendations too, but you have mentioned 3 good makers of 9mm and there is nothing wrong with any of them. Here is an important question though: What role will this 9mm handgun fit for you? You have seen pictures of 9mm handguns that run from $400 up to $2000 in this thread. I wouldn't use the Sig P210 for a carry 9mm self-defense handgun personally, but I would LOVE to have one for use at the range on a weekend. What role is it going to fit/fill for you? That will help us make even more usefull comments. |

I kind of think the response should be to answer the OP on what he listed, not open up the flood gates.
Of those he did list, I would say the USP first, the Sig second. The HK has the best grips of any pistol I have handled period, including the Sig. The HK is top notch, have not shot the USP but have shot the P30 a lot and like it. Price no object I would go with that one or one of the variants (P200, P30, P30L) Other than the grip the HK seemed to have a better SA trigger, not as good a DA pull as the Sig. Other features about even with some and some. Accuracy seemed to go a bit better with the HK but we are talking pretty small and day to day the Sig was as good but never better. Barreta PX4 Storm Compact? I have handled that one. Some really nice features, the trigger is very good. I don't like the grip nearly as well as the HK or the SP2022 which I own (great gun at an excellent price, I would call it the best bang for the buck of the three) I am not too keen on the safety for the DA/SA guns, but it is can can be used as an added safety feature but you have to be consistent what position you keep the safety, otherwise at need it can go wrong. Worst is its the opposite of the 1911 and flip up to fire. Sig SP2022 does have the nice aspect of a simpler left side with just the single combined slide release and take down lever in one and no issues with it doing anything odd. I think there are more 1911's in 9mm than you might realize....Wilson Combat makes almost all of their models in 9mm....and they even have a double stack now with a poly frame - double stack...spec ops model in 9mm.
Kimber makes some, so does Springfield...etc...all decent guns in 9mm.../ Baer will make some of his models in 9mm as well... personally I have a Sig 226 in 9mm and its a nice gun ...but its not a better gun than any of my 1911's in 9mm ....I have a Kimber Tactical Pro II model ( 4", alloy frame), a Baer Monolith 5" ( not my favorite gun or mfg), and a Wilson Protetor model 5" all in 9mm....and my Wilson in 9mm is one of the best guns I have....even better than a Sig 226 X-Five .../ and thats a nice gun too... |

There's more 9mms out there, it seems, than any other category. Lots of choices. Budget? Purpose? Likes and dislikes? "Get a Glock, and be done with it."

I would like a 1911 9mm in4 inch. But 1000 is about the max I wan to pay. The Kimber fits the bill but don't know that I want to trust my life with a Kimber, I have owned alot of them and when you get a good one they are great but some can be very unreliable. I like the Sig or Usp as what I might get but would like to have extra magazines for whatever I buy and have checked web pages and mags have sold out. I will have to go to the next gunshow and see what is available.

Yea, my "third" spare magazine for the SP2022 is likely worth $100 now
Only reason I got it was the postage was the same so I figured what the heck and sell it someday to a needy person. Now its an investment. |

Sooo.... You are looking for something for concealed carry/self defense, as well as for general fun at the range? I believe the STI Spartan IV can be had for under $1000, in 9mm, and they have a strong following. I know Rock Island makes a Tactical series 9mm 1911: the 5" and the 3.5" barreled versions. I'd trust my life to my Rock Island Tactical 5" .45acp 1911. Many others feel the same based on their experiences with Rock Island. They will be under $600, I believe. However, they are going to have 9 or fewer rounds in the magazine for a 1911 in 9x19mm. Personally I'd pick 8 rounds of .45acp over 9 rounds of 9mm Luger in a 1911 for defense. And I am about equally accurate with either round. If I had issues with recoil I'd go with the 9mm, as it generates less and I'd rather have 9 rounds on target rapidly than 5 rounds of .45 on target slowly. Again, your other makers put out good 9mms. I've had better luck with Sig handguns than H&K USP handguns, both in fit and trigger feel [da and sa]. My sample is of 2 sigs and 1 H&K. Not conclusive. I have no experience with Berettas. I'd trust them, but all three feel large in my moderate sized hands that have slightly stubby fingers. |
