Harrington Richardson Sportsman 22

I have a Harrington Richarson Sportsman, single action I beleive it is a model 999 but not certain. It needs and ejector or cylinder ejector assy. The S/N is S19537. can anyone tell me what year of mfg and if it is a 999. Please help!

Hello.
These guys like pictures to help with IDs.
There is at least one H&R collector somewhere on this forum.
Do a search for Numrich and you should find all you need.

Pictures would help. Sportsman 999 should be on the barrel. Is it a break top revolver? if not then it isn't one.

It is a double action revolver or supposed to be. There should be someone along with H&R advice.

ALL H&R Sportsmans are double action... we need more from seller.Did you see his pistol?

I ahve 8 H&R's in my collection. I like top breaks.

If "SPORTSMAN" is stamped into the side of the barrel, it's most likely a top-break pre-Model 999 - yours is from 1957 AFAIK.

While you might be shooting it single-action (cocking the hammer for each shot), it should be a double-action revolver, cocking/firing via simply pulling the trigger only.

Numrich Arms (google) is the most likely source for parts.

Could you tell us why it needs an ejector/star ?
Is the one for your gun missing ?

If it's missing, AFAIK a new extractor/ejector star would need to be gunsmith fitted, since the cylinder timing is done off the central ratchet teeth thereon.

I have an H&R Sportsman 999, bought it new in the mid 70's. Definitely double action, top-break, vent rib. I still shoot it. You can get the parts you need from Numrich.

AFAIK, the pre-1942 Sportsman 199, the Ultra Sportsman, and the New Defender were the only single-action, 9-shot .22 top-break H&R's, with all subsequent Sportsman, 999 Engraved, and 999 Sportsman being double-action.

MQP, Is your "single-action Model 999" marked as a Model 999 ?

If so, did you purchase it "new" ? - because if not, it might have been modified to shoot only SA, for target work, something done every once in awhile to Colt & S&W DA target revolvers, back in the 1950's (IIRC).

I bought it used in Madison, Wisconsin in 1964.
It looks the same as my father's 999 bought new in 1936.

My H&R has sportsman on the lefte side of a non vented barrel rib, "H. R. "Sportsman" stamped on the side and just below that is stamped Single Action in the same style lettering. It doe have the wrap around grips and is not a conversion. There is no model number on this critter. It is a breaktop 9 shot. On the right side is stamped in the same lettering as above the barrel says 22 Long Rifle Ctg. The sight are ajustable and made of steel. Top barrel marking is Harrington & Richardson Arms Co. The second line is Worchester, Mass. U.S.A. Still need help. GPC does not have the cyl or star ejector. I also need a hand spring. Can anyone help me with this further information?

James I have the exact same gun as yours and mine has the frame mounted firing pin, wrap around grips, same lettering etc.! Cool gun I'm thinking mines made in 1934 because the serial # is in the s124## range. Are these safe to shoot with modern ammo? Thanks Guys!

I own a H&R 999 Sportsman nine shot that has been in the family from the 1930's. It is a DA and works flawlessly.

Tried Gun Parts Corporation/Numrich Arms for parts? You might search for a Harrington & Richardson Forum.

The top break H&Rs are a hoot. Got this one cheap because the finish is in poor shape but it shoots great. Think it's from 1940 or 41.

A more recent version in the less common 4" barrel. This one shoots a little wild. Disappointing.

I thought I had an old Sportsman but I looked at it and it's a 22 special from 1927 with the saw handle grip. Change the grip out and it could double for the sportsman. Probably the Sprotsman's predecessor. It's double action also.

A friend of mine has a Sportsman 999 with semi-vented barrel (that is groves on the top of the barrel but they don't go all the way through.)

We shot it today. Excellent! Now it has all the bluing and guys, I really enjoyed shooting my friends 999. Must have had a 6 inch barrel.

Anyway, it brought me back to my 'teens' and when I had a H&R .22 for my revolver.
