Small single shot

I'm looking for a pretty small single shot 20ga or smaller shotgun, and something I can beat up without beating myself up over it(cheap). I want it to take fishing on my grandfathers ranch as a snake/anything else that is going to bite me in the ass gun. I would carry around my 1300 Defender but I hate to scratch it up and would like something smaller/lighter. Do any of yall have suggestions. And where I can pick one up. Thanks for all the help.

I just bought this little guy at a pawn shop...

It looks to be a very solid piece and it shoots so well I'm using it for trap now. Sure doubles are...interesting...but oh well.

New England Arms Pardner .410. New they run about $100, but look around to find some lightly used ones.

Oh, and by the same manufacturer this one looks interesting. You can store extra shells in the synthetic stock.

You use a .410 for trap?!?!?!!!

When I started shooting trap (this year) everyone said "you gotta use 12ga"...... are they full of it?

I'll double the recommendation on a New England or Rossi single shot in either 20 or .410. The 12s in the shorter barrel lengths are very heavy either.

Be careful though, buy one of the newer (post 1998) guns as the 1993-1997 guns had a problem with the trigger spur breaking off.

...Another recommendation for the New England Firearms "Pardner" model... had mine since eighth grade, hasn't failed me yet. You can get em at wallyworld for about $90.

I own a 20 gauge Rossi and have shot the other two. I'd recommend any of them. I use the 20 for clay pigeons as practice for quail and grouse season and just for fun.

Another good on is the Baikal singles. Had a hell of a time finding them again. They used to sell through EAA, but are now going through Remington under the Spartan name. http://www.spartangunworks.com/spr100_field.htm

My dad has a single 12 ga and it's been great.

These are also around a hundred bucks.

Well when I say 'trap', I mean wobble. Haven't tried regular trap with it yet. I'm sure it would do just fine though.

Now skeet and 5-stand...that's a different matter.

Since you want it for a cheap knock-around gun, why not prowl the pawn & gun shops for something used? So long as it locks up tight & isn't beaqten up too badly, odds are it will serve you long & well. Personally, I'd pick a 20 ga over a .410 anytime. Much more effective than a .410 for many uses, the 20 ga slug is good deer medicine as far as you can consistently hit a paper plate, & shells are one heckuva lot cheaper than .410's!
