Revolver choices

I plan to give up semis for anything other than range and one for wifey by the bed. I currently carry a S&W .38 1.78' barrel for spring/summer and what to add a .357. Must be under 3" barrel but not one of those small super light types. I've tried some of those and did not like them and over 3" is to big.

Give me some suggestions please.

The S&W Model 60 Pro Series is quite nice, with a 3" slab side barrel, night sights, and good laminated wood grips. The list price is only $20 more than the standard M60.

Rodeo Roy:

I take it from your post that the recoil from J frame revolvers is unpleasant; if so, why don't you try a Smith & Wesson model 19 or a model 66, they come is short barrelss and they are a little heaver than the the J frames. your heavier clothing will help to conceal them.

Another vote for S&W K frame snubbies in 2 1/2" barrels...either the model 19 or 66 ....I see a lot of them around.../ condition is everything - but $ 450 - $700 probably.

There is also the 686 ( a little bigger - an L frame ) ....in a 2 1/2" barrel as well...

Thanks for the links, maybe I was not clear but I really want to stay around the 3" barrel. That small LCR I did not like in .357, really at all, that's why I went with the S&W for the .38, I don't know much about Charter Arms and not many shops in my area carry that brand, and the ranges don't rent em. I did like that .40cal, not sure what rimless means and does it take the same ammo as my SR .40. I also like the Sp101, it's DAO (which I may have to skip for barrel lengnth) an can all I hear it's a popular piece, but popular don't always mean right for you. Gotta shot it more, I only tried 5 rounds and i think it was a GP

I'm pretty sure that Ruger's SP101 is double action, meaning both single and double available.

Here's an option someone else mentioned - a S&W Model 66 with a 3" barrel:

Balance and feel are great. That's a 66-4 from the early 1990s so hammer mounted firing pin, no MiM parts and no dangled hole for a lock. The 2-1/2" K frames are easier to find and cost less but the ejector rod isn't full length.

Personally, I like Smith's 627 8-shot with 2 1/2 inch barrel. Well, that's going to be one of my next purchases anyway. Finally, a revolver with punch and acceptable capacity.

How about a S&W M686 with 2" bbl and round butt? Short bbl but big enough to stifle recoil from .357 blasts. That one is on my list. Also, as already mentioned, the M19 or M66 are good choices.

Two obvioius choices are the sp101 in either 2 or 3" or the Smith 60, also 2 or 3". The sp101 is a bit heavier and should be more friendly when it comes to recoil. Both can be had in DA and SA. Both are 5 shots.

Ruger SP101, 2 or 3 incher, as mentioned. Also available in DA/SA or DAO.

Not a pocket gun. Lots of steel. Certainly comfortable with light .357s as I recall, and you may be less recoil-sensitive than I am. Wish I had not sold mine. Will last forever, in someone else's collection.....

THESE Have a lot of favorable reviews (except for price). I'm a S&W man myself, but I bought a 5" Rhino about 6 months ago and I like it so much I recently put the above 2" in lay-a-way.

Weblance the pics are nice. The Sp101 at the top is at the top of my list. Just a bit concerned about carrying. My Bodyguard .38 is easy to carry and draw, my Sr.40 not so much it's battling with my stomachs gravitational pull, I got a holster that works well and it's better, so I'm a little concerned.

I was intrigued by that Charter arms .40cal in one of the links above, th S&W's look a bit big and that hammer seems uncomfortable, may be nothing having the right holster won't solve. Weight wise any under 25oz and length overall 7' to 7.25'.

That Rhino seems kinda gimmicky with the barrel placement is that a proven design.

I want a 642 or Taurus Model 850 Ultralite. I love my autos and will never give up carrying my Glock 26, but revolvers are just 'sexy', ya know? Plus, they're so dang easy to pack and fun to shoot!

Here's my revolver that meets the specs you are wanting:

It's my Charter Mag Pug .357 with a 2.2-inch barrel and weighs 21 ounces. Light, but an easy shooter and carries well. Mine has Pachmayr Compac™ grips because i think they look better than the stock ones.

I picked up a factory-refurbished S&W Model 65 with 3" barrel- one of my favorite revolvers. Any of the K-frames should work for you.

Here's the GP100 with 3" barrel. Once again, it's a bit large for carry, although i plan to carry mine this winter. Also, it is a 6-shot and is a really sweet shooter. The extra weight really soaks up the recoil of powerful .357 loads.

The Smith and Wesson 686+ is made with both a 2.5" and 3" barrel. You have 7 shots and the weight of the 2.5" model is 34.1 ounces which is enough to dampen recoil. A great choice if you can afford it:
