looking for a Colt SAA .44 special cylinder

Does anyone know where I might find one? I have a Colt SAA in .44-40.

VTI Gun Parts has .44 Magnum cylinders for one or more of the Italian clones, but it's oversized in both length and diameter to fit a SAA. What might work, though, would be to buy a replacement .44-40 cylinder from them and have it reamed for .44 Special.

If you're going to do that either buy a .357 Magnum cylinder, or a blank cylinder from Brownell's. The head diameter of the .44-40 is larger than the .44 Special. The .44 Special is .457" dia., the .44-40 is .476"~.480"dia.

+1 get a .357 cylinder and have it rechambered. Had it done for a friend many times. Also, very occasionally a .44-40 owner will have a convertible/spare .44 Special they have no use for. Keep your eye out/post WTB in the Classifieds. The former you could conceivably have a new re-chambered cylinder in your hands within a few weeks. The latter you might wait months for.

unless you use a cylinder that came with your own gun, chances are youll be needing a GOOD gunsmith to get the new cylinder adjusted. if you have

Yes. You certainly can send it back to Colt. They'll sell you a cylinder AND fit it for you. It probably would be a bit pricey, but Colt is generally competitive with the top notch free market smiths. The plus is that it will be done right, and will be 100% Colt.

DO NOT FORGET TO INCLUDE THE COST OF A NEW HIGHER FRONT SIGHT. The 44-40 200GR bullets will shoot four to six clicks under the 240-250GR bullets of the 44SPL depending upon the propellent and charges used.
IF you decide to just shoot 200GR bullets in the 44SPL cylinder you might as well save your money as the 44-40 can and will do everythying with 200GR bullets that the 44SPL can accomplish.
ON the other hand, my COLT NEW FRONTIER 44-40/44SPL convertible shoots like a champ with both cartridges and ALL bullet weights.
And so it goes...
