Browning H.P. is "mid-size", and a great gun.

The only pistols in that category that I can speak for first hand are the G19 and the CZ-75 compact. Between the two I'm partial to the Glock, but either one should do the job just fine.
The S&W 3953 single-stack DAO that I had for a while was also nice: accurate, reliable, and definitely compact. Unfortunately it's not longer in production, but the compact variant of Smith's current 9mm M&P might be worth a look.

I don't see it. At least any more than any other mid-size tupperware 9mm. What have I missed?

Reliable, easy to shoot well, good size for carry and use, and every part in it is available through multiple sources. It is easy to modify if needed, but works well right out of the box.
No it is not pretty, and it doesn't do any one thing exceptionally well, but it does do everything that can be asked from a 9mm to an acceptable level. That is why many people that work in positions requiring an easy to conceal reliable 9mm will choose a Glock 19. |

Cz 75 compact is a great gun. I have 4 czs and that compact is one of the best 9mm pistols i have come across.
I rate it higher than most 9mm pistols on the market today. But my favourites has to be my beloved Browning High Powers |

Never mind my recommendation on a Glock. I have been away from this board for a couple of years. Now, I remember why. I am not a Glock "fanboy", but I do recognize a good weapon when I actually use one, despite what the local gunsnob at the club says. Of which I am NOT a part of and have no need to BE a part of. I use what I recommend, and if that doesn't fit the same recommendation of others, well, it is after all MY opinion based on years of experience and still being around to talk about it.
To the Original Poster: Yes, there are plenty of good 9mms out there. It will be very costly for you to go and buy each one to try for yourself to see what works and what does not. If you have the finances, go for it. I can tell you that I have seen enough failures from certain models to consider them inherent and will not use those models. All pistols can fail if not maintained, even Glocks. Good luck... Guess I'll go back to my other board now |

I'll put in another plug for the PX4 Subcompact. I really like mine. It is very comfortable to carry and it shoots like a dream. It is a great medium-sized 9mm w/ 13+1 capacity.

Thanks, Everybody!
You guys really put a lot of great suggestions out there for me. Some I am familiar with, and some that I did not know at all.
I've selected a few items for further study, and when I finally choose something I'll be sure to come back and let everyone know. |

When you do come back after deciding and/or buying, please update this thread and don't start another one. This way, we'll remember who it was and what we were talking about!

You will not do any better than the Ruger SR9 or SR9c especially when it come to value and reliability.

Sig 229 or the Glock 19, my 229 9mm is accurate so far up to 75 feet all day long, smaller than the P226 and just as accurate, same take down and sight availability. 13 Round magazines if you live in a free state. So far has been pretty reliable, as long as you keep cleaning it after each use and you use good quality ammo. The glock 19 will run as long as you lock your wrist and dont shoot lead through it. Personal experiences talking here, not forum or gun shop BS or Gun Magazine Paid advertisement Hype!

Glock 19 and I would look at a SW M&P 9 compact. I have a glock and a SW M&P40 For some reason the 40 is cheaper than the 9.

I have been struggling with this for decades. The only gun I have consistently carried is the P7M8. However, the Kahr PM9 is probably the best CC handgun available. It is ultra-compact, lightweight, chambered in a serious caliber and can be shot well with practice.
It is true that Kahr's QC has been spotty. But frankly, so has just about everyone else's.

Another nod to the Glock 19.

There are so many good 9mm's out there it's not even funny. I personally own a CZ75B and a Browning Hi Power. Love them both. Sig, Springfield, Glock, Smith & Wesson, HK, Ruger, FN, Beretta all make excellent 9mm's. Find a range and rent as many as you can. |

As cost is an issue for me (I am seriously looking at a 9mm as well), I am going to look at the Taurus 911.
In my case its an update for a Star PD and the dimensions are almost identical, mag capacity is almost obscene in the higher round versions (if that's a consideration). Derived from the Beretta, and while there are reports of problem Taurus, generally the 911/940 (and the variations there of) have some good reviews and a following. |

In my experience you are going to keep buying different guns over time trying to find the perfect one. The perfect gun will probably end up being something that isn't on the top of your list "want" wise. For example, a lot of folks propose mid-sized guns like the G19 or Sig 229, etc. They are too large for comfortable to EDC. YMMV, but I am telling you, I have been a gun nut since the Reagan administration, and I have seen all my gun nut friends go through the same progression. After tens of thousands spent, they end up with something "lame" like a Kahr or an airweight snubby in their pocket--or even a Kel-tec.
CC is not duty carry, as you are fully aware. Try to find something really, really light that you can still shoot decently. Just my .02 cents.

Had a CZ P-01 and regret selling it. Accurate and feels great in your hand.

I have been crrying either a full size Glock 17, Sig 226 or a Mid size Glock 19, or P229 for the last 15 years on a regular bassis. It is all about the equipment and the garment you have. I can shoot the larger frame guns with more accurracey and better follow up shot placement. Which gives me better confidence and less pain in the hand when shooting. And the funny thing is, noone has ever seem to notice me carrying and I never really notice the weight either.
