.270 140 gr Hornady Light Magnum-shoots the best out of my BDL, and is whitetail medicine.
I also had 50 rds of some handloads a friend made up once, using 130 gr. Speer Grand Slams. Those also shot extremely well out of my gun and the deer didn't complain at all. I've played around with other ammo in my .270, but none group as well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Occasionally I'll use the lever 30-30, w/the cheap 170 gr Remington powerpoints. With open sights from a bench, I've put them into quarter sized groups at 50 yds. Since it groups like that, I haven't even explored other ammo-there's no point in my mind. Works great for hogs and deer under 100 yds. |

I like Remington Cor-Lokts and Federal Hi-Shoks in .30-06. I usually reload my own though, and prefer Nosler Solid Base bullets or Sierras. It is hard to pick a bullet and or load that WILL fail for deer in 30-06, .270, or 7mm Rem. Mag.
About the only hunting ammunition that I really have a preference for are CCI Stingers for cold weather rabbit hunting. I think that they tend to riccochet less when dealing with frozen ground. |

Know this thread is old but ammo always changes
Have always shot Remington Core-Lokt in my 30-30 and .308 and no complaints. I recently got the 30-30 back from dad and handed down to my son. He just took a mature doe, 100 lbs dressed weight, at 50 yds with federal Power-shok. It was all the local store had. While the deer was as dead as any I was less than impressed with the bullet. It hit a rib square just behind the shoulder and left no clear exit hole. Very little blood sign tho she only went 50 yds and piled up. Up butchering it appears the bullet fragmented and just peppered the cavity with little pieces, a lot of damage just under the skin around the entrance hole. anyone else use this ammo? normal? |

I load my own except for the rimfire of course, and know there the best custom round for the rifle. For deer I stick pretty tight with the Nosler Partition's, but there are some good ones out there.

I am a Federal Fusion guy for my deer hunting. 180 grain Fusion for my 308 and 158 grain 357 mag. for my handgun. For my 22 I have always liked CCI mini mags. I also shoot 122 grain hp wolf ammo for my 7.62x39.

I guess I could have given a more complete answer. For rimfire I buy them of course. Myself and wife each have a Ruger No 1A light sporter with a Leupold century limited edition scope on them. They are exact carbon copys except for the caliber. Mine is a 30-06 and hers is a .243, I done this so no matter who used what they would look and feel the same. I reload and thats all I use, and feel it is the best you can get. There are many good loads, and I am not saying mine are the best but they work great for us. Both will shoot under 1" at 100 yards with the loads I have worked up for them. Getting older I am sure someone else would do alot better, but there not target Rifles either. For the 06 on deer I am using a Nosler 165 grain Paritition, CCI large primer, Lapua case, and IMR-4350. I am getting 3097 f.p.s. on average with a five shot string, and again I am not saying anything is better than the next persons. I believe most reloaders have the best working in there firearm. I am still under max with this, and no signs of presure, but it's working so good why mess with it up or down. For the same rifle playing around when I am not using the wifes .243 I have a varmint load made for it. I know it's not the best for that but its fun. I am using a Hornady 110 grain V Max, Laupa case, CCI large rifle primer, and Varget for the powder. On a five string average I am getting 3712 f.p.s. and still under max. I dont shoot very many at this speed, but they are fun. It will vaporize a porky into a red mist, never tryed it on a yote yet. But I will. The .243 for deer and I do know there is alot of debate over this for deer, I feel the correct bullet and placement no problem, just like you need with any rifle. If you need to watch them walk away thats what you do period. My wife has shot at two and dropped them both right on the spot, and she passed on some nicer ones because of doubt etc. For her deer bullet I am using a Nosler Partition 100 grain, Laupa case, CCI large rifle primer, and RL-22. The bigger bullet in the .243 likes the slower burning powder. I tryed some faster ones but the groups opened up. With a five shot string its getting 2930 f.p.s. I been working on a varmint round for her but I think I just found it. I will know in a few days. I had to back things way down. For that I am using a Nosler 55 grain ballistic tip, Laupa cases, CCI large rifle primers, and H-414. I am figuring they should be at about 4000 f.p.s. and still under max. I had them going faster but figured whats the point. Again not that many at that speed will be used thru it. The next time out I figure we will each put a fifthteen thru it. If it all looks good that will be it. Like I said both rifles are not varmint rifles but just fun to mess around with in the off seasons. Sorry I got so long on the answer but I use my own before anything else. I trust my life on my loads, and know they are the most accurate that I can get out of them, but always open for suggestions. I never had a fail to fire ever! If your not into reloading give it some thought it is a good clean, and fun sport.

Bought a .270 Model 70 in 2000...
...Been using Winchester PSP, the White Box and have been very successful.
When I find something that works, I have a tendency to stick with it. The reason I went to the .270 was the fact that after 15 years of shooting a Model 670 .243 I started having problems with bullets blowing up. On a 50 to 100 yard broadside shot, when I first started with that rifle, typical bullet performance with Winchester or Remington standard 100 gr ammo, would be for the deer to fall down D.R.T. (dead right there) or within 15 to 25 yards. I was on a lease in Central Texas where the limit was 4 deer, 2 bucks + 2 antler-less, and to stay on the lease you were required to harvest an antler-less each year. I never had much problem getting deer, they were everywhere...but about 1990, same broadside shot was giving different performance. Frankly, the bullets were going to go in the chest cavity and explode. Shrapnel everywhere and hearts blown up and the darn deer would run forever. I got tired of chasing the critters. None of those bullets exited the far side of the deer. I had the same luck, whether or not it was a Rem. or Win. slug. I never lost a deer, but I hunted for one late at night. Someone in the camp suggested I was not using enough gun. I borrowed a 270, I used my 7x57 and 30-06...problem solved. 30 to 50 gr more slug made the difference. I told you all my long, sad story to see if anyone else was having problems with the .243 cartridge? Anyone heard tales of thinner 100gr jackets? |

30.06-- 165gr Federal Premiums
.270-- 150gr Federal Premiums / Hornady 130gr SST .308-- 150 gr Federal Premiums 7mm-- 140gr Federal premiums / Hornady 140gr SPBT .243-- 100gr Federal Premiums .223-- Ultramax 62gr SP .22-- what ever is in the glove box No, I don't work for Federal Ammunition. Dougw47 I reload the .243 for the wife. Never had that problem, but I am sure it is do to reloading. I can see were you would get a bad taste from it. But in the wifes for the bullet I am using a Nosler 100 grain Partition. Most of the time they will do a complete pass thru. Every time so far. They do sell them already made, but they cost a arm and a leg.
