Go To Loads for .244 Remington 1:12"?

Having done my homework and first searched the forums for an answer I wanted to see if any of our readers have a load for a .244 Remington with the originql 1:12" twist. I found a few suggestions but these light loads were
shot through a 1:9" barrel.

I inherited the firearm from my uncle when I was a kid but now, some 45 years later I gave it to my oldest as an xmas gift and promised him some reloads. He lives in Colorado (Denver area) and hunts coyote and prairie dog. Distances are about 300 yds from what i understand and usually on warmer days with light breezes.

I am finally going to sit down with the press, (a '74 RCBS JR3, ) and get serious with some reloading for it. I was hoping a few folks could give me some tips on starting points for this configuration.

Wow, I haven't seen mention of a .244 in years. You DO know that in reloading books and such the .244 has had it's name changed to 6mm Remington? When the change was made, the case was kept the same, however Remington started putting faster twists on their rifle barrels.
For varmints, you might look at the 58gr Hornady V-Max and 40gr of IMR-3031. Or that bullet with 47.5gr of Win-760.

OH, I think 2.78 is the length on those, but I would load them to the lands and then set them back .05"-.08" off the lands.

The 12 twist is ideally suited for 85 gr bullets according to the barrel makers Lilja and Shilen. Shooting weights down to 55 gr should get good results as well. Some weapons may do well up to 95gr, but that is pushing it.

My best results were with Sierra 85gr HPBT and H414. I tried BL-C2, IMR3031, IMR4320, IMR4350, and IMR4831 as well.

Yes this Remington is one of the original Model 721's with a .244 indication on the barrel. I became aware of the distinction in barrel configurations when I first started reloading. I experimented with a few loads of 55 gr HP's and 65 gr Sierra spitzy's, but i never pursued the accuracy of those reloads just shot em.

Shoney, thank you so much for the starting point. I have to say in the limited experience I've had with the weapon the results pretty much bears out that even though Remington mftr'd 90 grain rounds for deer in the 244 config they are not particularly stable even at that weight.

I'd say the 85 to 65 grain weights are where we'll concentrate. Nosler and Hornaday have a couple of bullets i'd like to play with as well as your suggestions.
