V-V N340: position sensitive
I've been working up a 45acp load for 185gr jhp using V-V N340. Just out of curiousity I ran some across the chrono with the powder to the front of the cases, then some with the powder at the rear. Wow! Almost 90fps difference. With powder all the way to the rear (I pointed the muzzle up and tapped the gun slightly to settle the powder into position before each shot) I was getting about 980fps and with powder forward only 890. Odd thing is that when chronographing the loads as usual, my deviations weren't all that bad. I guess the powder settles between shots. I'm thinking that I won't have any problem making the "pf" at the IDPA match after all! Just FYI. Stay safe.

Very common results. The biggest difference I've seen was about 175 fps in a revolver. The load was a RN lead over Unique.

The powder settles during recoil. I tried this test rather informally once, using Bullseye. All the same, try Titegroup, or a bulkier powder.
