Loading the .45-70
Picked up a new Marlin 1895 today and ordered components for loading 350gr Hornady RN. Latest Hornady Manual says 4198 is one of the best. I'm interested in staying in the 1600-1800 range for deer and hog. Can anyone suggest some loads or powder suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I'm getting 1920 fps using 48 gr of H4198, a fed 210 primer and a 405 gr Cast Performance. This is with my 1895 guide gun. I bet if you used a little less than my 48 gr you'd get what you are after. I'd try 46 gr. that is a start load for 400 gr bullet.

I'm running the same bullet in mine, 350 gr hornady RN with IMR 4198 with a mid level load of 40.0gr. and I'm right around 1650fps. I've taken 3 deer and 2 moose with this load.

I do a 400 grain cast bullet with 4198 and it works good. I also loaded the Hornady bullet with 4198 and I think 3031 and had good results as well.

I do a 405 grain home cast hollow base round nose flat point. I load with 14 grains of Trail Boss with any large rifle primer I can get. Pleasant to shoot, very clean, and more accurate than I can get with iron sights.
