Barrel conversion
Bear with me...I'm not that gunsmith literate.
I have a handi-rifle in .308 and was wondering if it is possible to have it converted to 7mm-08. I am going to order the -08 barrel from nef, but it made me curious if it was possible. Thanks. |

No
The barrel on your rifle now has a bore diameter to fire .308" bullets. The 7mm-08 fires a 7mm bullet but it uses the parent .308 case necked down to 7mm to hold the bullet. Thus you get the designation of 7mm bullet in a .308 case, or the 7mm-08. They will in no way interchange other than you can use .308 cases and neck them down to fire the 7mm-08 bullets in the barrel you are ordering, so if you are into reloading and want to use any of the brass you have saved up, you could resize them to the 7mm-08 and save some money.

SBG,
The 7mm-08 Remington uses a .284" diameter bullet as opposed to your .308 Winchester which uses a .308" diameter bullet. So even though both rounds use the same parent case, you could make a 7mm-08 into a .308, but not the other way around. Luckily H&R/NEF can fit your reciever with a new barrel in the caliber(s) you want and then you will have a switch barrel rifle. Contact H&R/NEF/Marlin for more info on that.
