Pls look at these pics.. Op rod bent?

I'm cleaning and lubing my m1 and while hand cycling I can hear a squeak. So I know two metal parts are rubbing. Closer look shows it is the op rod rubbing against the forward handguard barrel band. When the bolt is closed the gap between the barrel and the op rod is about 1/4". When the bolt is open the gap is about .150". I believe the op rod is supposed to have some bend but not sure as the gas plug is not on the same plane as the op rod catch.

Bolt open.

They are not perfectly straight as they are built. Mine came from CMP out of the box slightly bent. If you are in doubt, take it to someone who is knowledgeable about them and have them check it out.

Perform a "tilt test" to check the op-rod function. Go to the link below and scroll down to item 12 to see how:

Yes the op rod is bent or it could not possibly enter the gas scylinder. Your rifle is fine
Even if the op rod is slightly bent out of spec but rifle functions all is fine
People unknowingly put way to much stress on the Op Rod test. The Op Rod test is only to be used as a diagnostic tool if the rifle is not functioning properly

The op rod on the M1 Garand is not supposed to be perfectly straight. They were made with a slight bend in them. As others have said, it's really only a problem if your rifle is malfunctioning, otherwise it's fine.

Just make sure you grease everything up good, including the underside of the barrel where the op rod makes contact. You sure the squeaking noise is coming from the op rod? Mine sometimes squeaks when the bolt lugs ride along the receiver.

I've always used this guide when lubricating my M1.
