Winchester rifle. Need info
My roommates boss is selling a Winchester rifle in 30.06. I'm assuming that would make it a 1895. He's only asking $300 so depending on condition it still seems like a good deal. It looks like I'm going to be able to test fire but trying to get some info first.
Is there a wesite I can look up serial numbers for winchesters and is this an alright deal? |

Unless that rifle is a worn out piece of junk - it's a great deal for that price and- the Winchester 95 in 30-06 is a great rifle - last lever gun John M Browing designed. Mine is in Hi Grade but shoots the same as Grade 1 and it's a fine shooter that shoots under one MOA at 100 yards, is nicely balanced, reliable and easy to maintain.

I was just reading today that Winchester first started producing the 1895 in 30.06 in 1908, and is this is the only lever action to come in that caliber. That's a great deal. That's a gorgeous gun, OJ. I truly think that John Moses Browning was the greatest gun designer in history.

Here's a site to date the serial numbers:
http://www.proofhouse.com/win/index.html Are you sure the Winchester is a lever action 1895 and not a bolt action M70? |

Just because he said it's a Winchester rifle and it's chambered in 30-06, you assumed it's an 1895?????
Got news for you. Winchester has made a TON of different models chambered in 30-06. Just for instance, the most revered Model 70. Without other info, it means nothing at all to say it's a Winchester in 30-06 for only $300. I do have a soft spot for Winchesters though, so I'm not trying to dissuade you. I happen to have a pre-64 mod 70, a mod 70 from the early 70's and also a fairly modern mod 70 with a synthetic stock. Guess what? They all shoot incredibly well, although the values range from maybe $350-$1200. |

Yes. He said it's a lever and 30.06. I honestly thought he was wrong on the caliber until I did a search. I wasn't aware of a 30.06 lever gun. I may get to see it tomm but won't be able to shoot it until Thursday.

I zeroed mine to hit point of aim at 25 yards and "fine tuned" it to hit about 2" above POA at 100 yards. Shot from a fist rest - resting fist on table - solo shots were free hand while sitting. I make no claim to be a sharpshooter - that rifle is just a real joy to shoot.
