Varget shoots really great for me with 55 FMJ BT but H335 charges so much more smoothly than Varget.

Just wanted to share that for any other newbs.

I have noticed this about Varget, too. The Varget granule shape (cylinder shaped pellets) does not meter well for 223, ~25 grns. However, for 308 ~44 grns it seems to meter more consistently, through the same meter, but with the corresponding volume adjustment.

H335 has been one of my most accurate 223 powders I've ever used , specifically with Sierra 52 HPBT match and 55 Berger Match. And indeed it does meter very well.

So side note... I take it meter is reference to weighing a charge out. Am I using the proper term when I say charging to reference powder into brass?

Definition of metering: To measure a certain volume in cubic centimeters, of powder, intended to weigh x (target); actual weight = y. Variance z = x - y

From best-to-worst metering:

1. Measured and weighed charge y = x. Variance z = 0.
2. Measured and weighed charge y NE x. Variance absolute value GT Zero.

A good metering powder consistently will have a low or Zero variance.

A bad metering powder will have a variance. The higher the variance. the worse the metering.

Thus "metering" is a measure consistency. Varget does not meter well = inconsistent weights from a powder measure.

You should give Ar2206H (hodgdons H4895) a try. I have used it to great succes in my 22-250 and seen int go good in a 223 and 308 as well. It is temperature insensitive and cleans out easily. It is an extruded powder (granules not ball or spherical) but does meter effectively out of my powder thrower.

Just my 2 cents.

Varget meters very well in a Lee Perfect Powder Measure.
I get a variation of +/-0.1gr.

I use H335, H4895 and Varget for .223

What powder charge/bullet type/bullet weight/rifle/barrel length/twist rate were giving you "garbage" loads?

Varget and H-335 were my main stays to ,untill i tried RL-15.Accuracy picked up very much, Savage FVSS-223 1 in 9 twist.

H335 is my mainstay powder for 55gr-69gr bullets in 223.
I have tried H322 and 4895,but my current rifles don't care for them.
BL-C(2) is also a great powder,along with Reloader 10x & 15.
I have great heavy bullet loads 69gr-80gr with Varget and even a few varmint loads,but it's much easier to use H335 on the varmint loads and have the same accuracy.

I really prefer IMR 3031 in a .223/5.56 but just for the metering issue and it does work well I almost always use H-335.

Does any one use Bench Mark, it works very good for me with 53 and 53 gr bullets.
