What, no birdshot?

8 rounds of 00 in a Mossberg 500 w/20" barrel.

From the above responses, it looks like the buckshot vs birdshot debate is settled.

The #4 doesnt penetrate quite enough for HD, the 00 and 000 a little too much. #1 or #2 would be just right. I haven't gotten around to getting any, so I will make do with 0. More pellets is an advantage, and it penetrates enough, so nothing lost. As for why load buckshot/slug/buckshot/slug as I do, it's because the first shot may be hurried, so a spread is desirable. The second shot will be aimed. The next buckshot round is for an additional threat. If I somehow forget where I'm at in the progression, I doubt I will be the one suffering. I would rather have more rounds, so I don't use magnum loads. Just overkill IMO.

#4 buckshot

It acts like a slug at close range... under 15 feet

Better than 00 at medium range... under 30 feet

Covers more area evenly at long range... over 30 feet

Like hitting with 20+ .22LR's at the same time...

Round #1: 1 oz. "Beanbag" @250 fps

Rounds #2-7: Hornady TAP .00

Round #1 is to help mitigate the fact that my wife is huddled in the closet with a Big Black Shotgun when we have to go to court.

8 of these things.

They say "00" on the wad. I suppose that's what Mr. home invader bad guy will say after I touch a few off in his direction, too.
