Norwegian Krag 6.5x55, hunting loads??
Hi, I'm getting a Norwegian Krag in 6.5x55 and would like to hunt with it,BUT, I'm told its not "strong "enough for full house loads ,So what is a good, safe load for deer and maybe moose. The Scandies hunt Moose all the time with 6.5's I'm just wondering if the Krag is up to it. Any help for this CANUCK is appreciated. JITC

If in good condition, your Krag is safe
For any standard factory 6.5x55mm load. Keep in mind that the Krag is intended for working pressures of only 45,000psi, AND that the Krag action only has ONE locking lug! AND that the Norwegian Krag is likely the 1912 model, and while made of good steel, is not up to modern metalurgical standards. And they haven't been made in quite a while.
That being said, the best thing to do is have your Krag carefully checked over by a good gunsmith, paying particular attention to the locking lug area. Any cracks or other damage there, and the rifle is a wall hanger, not a shooter. If it checks out OK, then it should be fine to use with any regular 6.5x55 loading, staying away from max level handloads. The 6.5 Swede is a fine round, light recoiling, flat shooting, and with the proper bullets capable of game the size of moose. Take care of your Krag, don't try to hot rod it, and it will likely give you years of good service. Please, give us pics when you can. I'm sure it would be something worth seeing.

I got a 1914 Krag-Jørgensen, it is a nice rifle.
For hunting deer it is ok, but not for elk hunting, as the action is weak. A safe load is a bullet at around (6,5g/800m/s) 100grains at a speed around 2600ft/s. If you are looking for reload data on the net, look for data that is marked 6.5x55 Krag as these is reduced loads optimised for the Krag, compared to 6.5x55 Swede or 6.5x55 Mauser |
