Does anybody out there have any input on the 7mm-08 as a deer, hog or bear cartridge? I have the heavy end of the calibres well covered but am looking for an easy to carry, light recoil gun for medium hunting. i am considering a Browning stainless A-bolt.

I have a 700 in 7-08, wonderful. No experience with bear, but hogs and deer tend to fall quickly after the report and light recoil of this rifle. I have had good results on game to 300 yds, and paper to 800. A bit of a sleeper in that it does not have the fame of, say the .270, but if you use it in the same reguards as the .270, it works excelent. Remember, if you reload, it is not a 7MAG, keep bullet weights at 150-160 or less. I heve never needed much beyond 139ers.

The 7mm-08 is a modern version of the old 7x57 which has a fantastic record as a hunting cartridge. One friend here got a black bear with his this last season and he's used one for years on deer and other things . It's a winner and will be around for a long time !!

I own a 7x57 Mauser Winchester Featehrweight and once also owned a Model 7 in 7mm08 that I sadly sold. I cannot recommend the 7x57 or 7mm08 enough.

Thanks for the good words. I have a 3.5X10 Leupold that I plan to use. It is a good clear scope.

I'm as happy as a pig in a corncrib with my 700Ti in 7mm08. My reloader's book sez a 140-grain bullet at 2,900, so it's not much under the performance of a .270 or an '06--as much as makes no nevermind.

I'm regularly getting 3-shot groups inside one MOA, and the same point of impact for factory loads as well as my handloads.

6-1/2 pounds, fully dressed, makes for easy carrying...

My sister-in-law hunts Wyoming mulies and elk with her Browning BLR in 7mm-08. It works every time; she hunts with FEDERAL Premium ammo featuring 140 grain Nosler Parttiton bullet. I've personally witnessed a 600-ish pound bull elk toppled with one shot taken at about 225 yards or so. The bullet broke a rib going in and tore apart chest organs.

I'm certain that a black bear can not stand up to a well placed Nosler bullet.

Ive been driving myself crazy, oops i mean researching, a new rifle for PA deer and black bear and I'm 99% sure I will get a Rem 700 Mountain SS in
7mm-08. Can I expect similar trajectories to the 270 for shots of 200 yds or less? (as posted in the art of the rifle section, im still a newbie so any info about 7mm-08 ballistics would be great.) I really need to get a book so I can compare this stuff myself.

Trajectory is very similar for .270 Win and 7mm-8. By Federal loading, with both cartridges using a 140 grain Accubond and zeroed at 100 yards, the .270 will drop ~3 inches, and the 7mm-08 ~3.5 inches at 200 yrds.

Last week a freind of mine went down and bought a used 7mm08 in a used Savage. Rifles looks like it was used for a chopping ax handle at one time. Hardly any blueing left, and the stock is so beat up, I had to check for cracks in the wood. He gave $150.00 for it at the local pawn shop, scope and all.
Long story short. I loaded three different loads up for him with three different powders, and three different bullets.

Would you beleive this rifle will shoot 1/2" groups with every load?
I spend weeks trying to work up loads for a particular gun, and this guy buys a shooter right off the shelf.

Worst part: HE WON"T SELL IT TO ME !

A 67-year-old friend of mine switched to 7mm-08 years ago and swears by the cartridge. He has taken a lot of whitetails and a few hogs with it. He is an excellent shot and has popped each hog in the head and likes neck shots on deer, but whatever he shoots usually drops in its tracks.

You can definetly expect almost the same trajectories but just to make sure go to the remington website and look under ammunition at the ballistics comparator. You can pick a .270 round for comparison and two loadings of 7mm-08 that you are interested in. Thatll give you what you want to know I use it lots for factory ammo loads.

As for the choice of 7mm-08 my brother swears by it and keeps trying to make me buy one, im gonna go for the middle of the road between my favourite (.243) and his (7mm-08) and buy a .260 Remington maybe even this year if all goes well.

This thread keeps popping up and each time I get enticed because I just bought a Model 70 in 7mm-08 a few months ago and I am absolutely in love. Each time the thread re-appears I get sucked in thinking there will be more out there on this caliber. Pretty much it's all been said. Great round, no kick unless your on the receiving end and it kills as well as the .308. I am just a dog returning to his vomit.
