280 Fire forming question
I am considering a new barrel for my encore, a 280 ackley improved. I understand, you can safely fire .280 rem rounds through this barrel. When doing so, will the fire formed brass still be reloadable? I'm completely new to the wildcatters and fire forming brass. Also any suggestions on fire forming 280 loads would be a great help. thanks

Depends on how the chamber is cut... mostly yes, some no. Contact your barrel maker and ask them.
If it's a "typical" 280AI chamber... the 280 Rem cases will be fireformed to basic 280AI... the case will shorten a bit and blow out to the AI shoulder angle. C

I took the more expensive, but much less agrivating route of buying the Nosler custom 280 AI brass.

Providing your improved chamber was properly cut, fireforming standard 280 brass, factory or hand loads should be a simple one step process.
Drop in a 280 Rem. into the chamber, close the action, fire and extract a 280AI case. A properly chambered AI will be made with a very slight crush fit, the standard 280 making contact with the AI chamber at the point where the neck meets the shoulder. This gives proper head space and allows the standard 280 round to safely fire in and form to the AI chamber. Keep em coming! Crusty Deary Ol'Coot |

If you can find some factory ammo cheap enough, don't be afraid to sight in and use it until you get enough cases to start loading. From my experience with the TC barrels chambered for AI calibers, they shoot very accurately even with FF loads.
Good luck with yours. |
