Handgun safe re-model
I had hit the wall in my handgun safe. The way it was set up I could not fit all the handguns I owned into it.
I decided tonight to spend some time re-modeling it to make more room. The left image shows it the way it was before. A center divider held up small shelves but took up a lot of room. Also the shelves only went up so far so alot of space above the top shelf was wasted. The right image (not a very good pic due to the new black interior) shows how it is now. I took out the center divider and built shelves from particle board then upholstered them in heavy black felt. I then built an upright which I covered with felt and installed spools upon to hold some of my guns up the back to try and use some of that wasted space. The whole project only took about 3 or 4 hours including shopping time and the safe that could hold about 18 handguns before is now holding 21 with room for another shelf or twostill. |

Nice remodel! Want even more room?
http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/sto...e=HANDGUN+RACK Four to six handguns in the space that you're using for three--maybe even two short racks per shelf, equals a lot more storage! (Plus room for more goodies... )

Nice collection.
You can't possibly want any more.......right? Well, likely you do, so here are 8 in a space that measures just under a cubic foot.

I do figure that those racks a couple of you have bought or built will have to be my next step in storage. |

Take the door insert off first and lay it flat with the guns positioned on it to determine where the spools should go before drilling the holes. |

If you want more room, I have found an inexpensive way to store my guns vertically rather than horizontally. I went to Lowes and bought a Pot Lid Rack in the kitchen section, for about $10.00. I now can store 9 handguns in 12 inches. The rack is heavy duty, vinyl coated wire, like a dish drainer.

After these ideas on finding ways to get more room, you`ll buy more guns, and eventually you are going to have to buy another or bigger safe. If you need even more room, you can put them in mine.

Safe Remodel
Inspired by PlayBoyPenguin, and after searching the web, local gun stores, safe shops and Home Depot, I bought the Lowe's safe he's using. Best buy on the block.
This weekend I'll modify the shelf system as per PBP even though my "collection" is just beginning. I could have spent a lot more without getting more. Thanks Penguin. |
