30-30 307 info?

Years back we ran sheep an goats here in Oklahoma and the coyotes and neighborhood dogs gave us fits.My dad always shot his model 94 Winchester 30-30 and had problems of shooting low with factory ammo. I had just started reloading(mainly for economy) and found some new(25 years ago) 125 gr flat nosed hollow points in 307 diameter sold hard an heavy to 30-30 shooters. I tried them and with IMR 3031 powder, max load(speer manual) it made a world of difference. Coyotes were not safe at 300 yards. If my Dad could see them he would shoot at them and had a 75% kill rate. The other thing he liked was the reduced recoil from the lighter bullet.

I am trying to find those .307 diameter 125 grain flat nosed hollow points again, anyone know if they still make them?

Sierra makes some

They have 125 grain flat-nose bullets with jackets designed for .30-30 velocities. They are listed as .308" now at Midway, but they will work fine in the .30-30 cartridge.

You can read about them here http://www.sierrabullets.com/index.c...le&caliberID=9 .

And you can buy then here http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct...tnumber=491932 as well as several other places.

Thanks

I've shot those, have some on hand--but they don't perform as well as the .307 do. Either one do a dandy job on deer. Just have to be careful not to load too hot or the hollow point starts mushrooming in the air, supposedly.

Do you know what brand of bullets your old .307" diameter 125 grainers are?

I know that Sierra USED to make .307" diameter .30-30 125 grain bullets, but I think they only make them as .308" diameter, now.

Sierra?

Pretty sure they were Sierra, green box?Cardboard? I will look an see if I have an old box, pretty sure I do with maybe half a box left. They also make awesome turtle rounds out of a .308.Loaded some up for an old 742 308 an shot turtles(20 years ago).Blew chunks of turtle out of the water.Gave the catfish something to eat.
