22 mag ammo is cheaper but how much cheaper is the extra cost for the 17hmr worth it?

To me it is! I converted my 10/22 mag over to the .17 easy 50 yards more range! but be aware .17 hates cross wind.

These some people! don't own one!! Go to rimfire central fourm and ask that queston. In a 5mph crosswind it will drift several inches at 150 yds This tiny round only weighs 16 grams. yes it is fast but is it so fast that gravity has no efect also? bullet has no arch at 50 yds? think about it.
