Mossberg 500 accu-choke?

I have a Mossberg 500 12 gauge with a 28 inch barrel (accu-choke) and I really don't know anything about the choke. Would it be safe to shoot slugs through? Just some info on the choke would be nice, though.

What choke is it? Take it out and the constriction will be printed on the tube side

Yes you can shoot slugs through it. Fosters and Brenneke's will work the best...however. Full choke is generally not condusive to good accuracy with slugs. Generally speaking you would be better off with an I.C. or Cyl. choke. You would be best off with a rifled choke tube for slugs; this or a rifled barrel are pretty much mandetory for sabot type slugs if you want to get any level of accuracy from them. You'll also find buckshot won't pattern as well with this tight constriction; again I.C. will usually be much better.

Edit to add: Steel shot reacts differently in chokes...acting like one or two sizes tighter constriction. If you plan to shoot steel, consider buying Pattern Plus, Trulock, or other chokes designed for steel; their constriction designation will be much more true for the shot / size combo.

Accu-choke are interchangeable with Winchester, Browning Invector, and Weatherby chokes.
