Western Field Shotgun (Photos Added)
Can someone out there give me some info on a Western Field breakdown shotgun. The only ID I can find on the gun is behind the trigger guard (32085*E). What caliber, year and manufacturer.

With out more information, no. Western Field was a store brand for Montgomery Ward department stores. Ward would contract with various markers to sell their firearms under Wards store brand of Western Field. Your shotgun could have been made by a number of different manufactures. By break down , do you mean " break open " as in the barrel is hinged and is opened to load and unload? Is the shotgun single barrel or double? If the gun has no other identification on it then perhaps a picture could help identify the maker. As for as the caliber, I'm fairly sure any shotgun sold by Wards would have the caliber stamped on the barrel, if not that is truly surprising and must be a very old shotgun.

Should have a model number stamped on top of the loading port between thier and the mag tube. Also the gauge and brand should be stamped on the barrell. Western Field is a mossberg 500 clone so some things for a mossberg 500 would fit on the WF. I dont know about barrels, but stocks will swap. I just built a 16 gauge HD western field with mossberg 500 parts.

CC, Westernfield is their "Private Label" brand... They would have it on single shot, doubles, pumps, auto loaders etc...
I doubt this'n in question is a M-500 as he called it a "break down" gun... so it is likely either a "break action" gun or it is a nicer "take down" gun meant to be dissasembled for nice and easy encasement in the usually provided custom case... Brent |

Western Field Shotgun
The only thing stamped on the gun besides the " Western Field" is a serial number: 32085*E. I know that the caliber is usually stamped on the barrel, but nothing here or anywhere on the gun. Corrections Cop wrote there should be something on top of the loading port by the mag tube, again nothing. RJay asked if it was a single or double barrel, it's a single. Sorry bout all the verbage but since I wasn't able to include pictures this will have to do for now.

I seen the "Marlin" bolt action slug gun thread...
And thought... "That don't look like a *mossberg* bolt action"... we get a certain thing associated with a matter and forget others might have played ball too... Brent |

Western Field
HogDogs, that Stevens 94 looks to be real close. Mine has a little extra curl behind the trigger guard and the forearm piece is slightly different, thanks. Any way of tracking that serial #32085*E

Okay, here are the pics of the gun to identify...
Good Luck finding exactly what it is and I bet a prized wooden nickel, it will soon be known... http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...psd5c486b5.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...psf0072eed.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...ps55f22645.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...psa05aa35d.jpg http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...ps7af9d215.jpg Brent Last edited by hogdogs; December 17, 2012 at 11:15 AM. |

Here is my 1953 Stevens 20ga. double gun... Note that the part of trigger guard is actually deformed (straightened) so that squiggle spur looking part is not where it originally was... Should be about where your is located...

That's the only trigger guard I've seen that is remotely the same. I noticed the where the gun breaks looks very similar also. From what I have seen so far I believe my gun might very well be a Stevens I just wonder what year..

Western Field Model 10, made by Stevens as the Model 94. The gun was manufactured for over 50 years, without a serial number chart it would be hard to nail down its age. As far as what gauge it is, measure the bore with a set of calipers.

Thank you for the pix.
That is NOT a Savage/Stevens Model 94, since they were NEVER made with a receiver that had other than straight/smooth sides - unlike your gun, which has contoured receiver sides . In fact, the receiver looks almost exactly like an W.H.Davenport single, ca.1895.(below) . Last edited by PetahW; December 21, 2012 at 07:55 PM. |

Wow that does look closer than any comparison I've seen yet. What gauge is that particular gun in the pic?

While wondering what gauge other guns may be, it won't matter when comparing to yours...
You cannot guess... A 16 gauge would look nearly the same as a 12... What you need is to measure the bore... at muzzle... Considering there may/will be a choked diameter... Here in this link is a chart with bore diameters of each gauge along with the dimensions to subtract from "true bore" or cylinder choke (no choke at all)... http://www.colonialarms.com/chokespecs.html That will tell you what gauge your gun is... Being quite old, you cannot assume it to be a 3 inch shell chamber nor even a 2 3/4 inch chamber... A QUALIFIED gunsmith will have a set of chamber gauges in his tool assortment... Basically will do what is shown in the pic with this link... http://www.csmcspecials.com/Handy_Mo...ge_p/t0321.htm If you have a 2 9/16ths chamber, a 2 3/4 unfired round will fit but wouldn't be safe to fire it... You need both of these dimensions before trying toload and fire this firearm... Brent |

Sure thing... That is what we, here, try to do... It would be irresponsible not to share safety info to those who may not already know...
I know far less than many here but will gladly share what little I do know... Brent |
