RL-19
Just wondering why RL-19 is good for 7x57 Mauser but not 8x57 Mauser?
Anybody know? |

It may not work as well as others, but may work ok.
Not all that different from 30-06 and R19 is a go to in that caliber. R17 is not listed in my Hornady but R15 is which is also considered one of the new go to 30-06 powders. Bullet shape (choice) may be a factor |

If your referring to the data they have posted, you can figure like I have been told by them, testing is expensive, and they usually only test out the things that are the most requested or popular.
That doesn't mean they don't have data for the 8mm, you should give them a call and find out from them. They simply might not have posted it in their manual due to limited use or bullet variety. Hope that helps.

It has to do with expansion ratio.
The surface area of the base of a 7 mm bullet is smaller than the surface area of the base of an 8mm bullet. So the volume of the chamber/bore increases more rapidly behind the 8mm bullet as it moves through the barrel. That translates to using a faster burning rate, like RE-15,unless you get into heavy bullets. In the more extreme, compare powers for .243,308,and .358 Or powders for .264 or 7mm magnums,vs 338,or .458 Win mags. You will see slow powders for the smaller bores, and qucker powders for the larger bores. You will see a similar trend with bullet weights.Heavy bullets, slow powder, light bullets quick powder. |

R19 is rated and highly for 30-06.
I just don't see the 8mm being that far out from it. I think its at least viable, just don't know why or why not. |

I think case cap to bore ratio for a 7x57 is closer to 30-06 than the 8x57 is.
Nothing says you cannot use RE19 in an 8x57.My guess is you will give up some velocity. My Nosler book shows, for a 200 gr partition,4064 as a good choice . 4350 gives equal velocity, but the load is compressed. Try it with a chrono, see what you get.RE 19 is not so different than 4350 for burn rate. With heavy bullets,it might do well. |

Reloader 19 works fine in the 8mm Mauser. It just prefers bullets at or greater than 175gr's.

I haven't looked this up but I'd venture a guess that .308 win and 8x57 have more of their suitable powders in common than 30-06 or 7x57
Varget is a good one, CFE 223, or RL-15 should also be good places to start. It really depends on the weight of bullet you want to shoot. 180 gr is my favorite for 8x57 because it was what my sporterized K98 liked the best. YMMV

Expansion ratio and energy density are the problem. In QuickLOAD I show a case 105% fill by volume (compressed 5%) under a 175 grain bullet not quite reaching the middle of the starting load pressure range. About 10000 psi below Maximum Average Pressure. Even compressed 10% it is at about 5% below MAP. Even with a 195 grain bullet 110% fill density doesn't get the pressure higher. Too much space lost to the bigger bullet.

I think RE19 is a little slower burning. |
