My nightstand gun is chambered at night and there is no change during the day. I do not have little kids in the house, and even when I did, I had already instilled in them layered training ala Ayoobs "Gunproof your Children" book. Then it goes to the waistband in the AM.

Loaded and ready to go in a hangun safe with electronic lock that sits between the nightstand and the bed. It's secure and safe from any accidents even though it's only my wife and I in the house. We do have other family members including young kids stay with us at least once a year. A good safe of this type with finger placement grooves on top to guide your fingers to the buttons in the dark only costs about $100. It's cheap insurance.
