For punching paper and plinking most everyone seems to like Missouri Bullets. For hunting and really hot loads I would suggest Beartooth Bullets or even Oregon Trails. If used for hunting it's all about the meplat and that is where a LBT bullet such as a Beartooth will shine. Both make gas checked bullets for the hot loads and are over 20+ BHN.

Me!

Casting your own is fairly easy and really cost effective.

Beartoot Bullets will supply you with .44 cal. bullets from .429" up to .432" so you can cut down leading. Get bullets same size as your cylinder throats and larger than groove diameter.

Penn's 200 bevel base works well in both handguns and rifles. For deer the 320 is like hitting them with a cannon.

Check with mastercastbullets.com

I've used their .357, .45, and .30 pistol bullets and they are great even when pushed hard. Don't know why .44 would be any different.

Z Cast Bullets is the cheapest, but for a really nice selection and great flat base (not bevel) cast bullets, Matts Bullets is the place to go.
Neither one will lead your barrel if they fit like they ought to.

Leadhead bullets makes the best WFN for the $. I like their 270gr plain base WFN - pretty much the only cast I shoot anymore.

Although I have never used Leadhead I have a friend that uses their gas check bullets in a 30-30 in a Contender. Most impressive for accuracy.

not 'good'; 'best' (unsolicited)

Penn Bullets for non-exotic choices; my personal choice.

Beartooth and Cast Performance for serious special-needs projectiles; best. Also my personal choice.

These three manufacturers typify what I consider best business practices. The products offered are superior, enough so that certain ammunition manufacturers choose their bullets.

I'm buying Penn Bullets for my personal use; I could buy any.
I've certainly tested enough other brands.

I cast great bullets for my 44 mag. I also cast some great ones for my 45 auto.

Good luck on your search. If you get into a bind let me know I might be able to help you out with a few.

Just my .02$- (.01$ after our Dear Leader gets his cut)

I can speak to Beartooth and Cast Performance bullets very highly, as I have used them both, and they are very good bullets. I will use both in the future as they perform very well in my 45-70, .45 Colt and .45 acp loads, as well as my .41 Mag loads.

As for the .44 Mag, I highly recommend the Keith style bullet from Leadhead Bullets (www.proshootpro.com). This is an excellent bullet for both paper punching and hunting, IMHO.

One thing I just love about Leadhead is that if you get the Phone # from the gun magizine ads and call him, you will be able to speak to the man personaly, six days a week until midnight!! He is a very friendly and professional person to speak with, and is very happy to discuss any issues with you right over the phone any time you call!!

I have only used his Keith style bullet in my .44 Mags, but that is probably the only bullet I will be using for the forseeable future, as it does everything that I want a bullet to do. They seem to be cast at the optimum hardness to prevent excessive leading of my barrels and have given great accuracy to boot.

The Keith bullets from Leadheads do everything that I ask from them in my
.357,.41, .44, and .45 loads as far as accuracy and stopping power. So you may want to give them a try. They are my #1 bullet in all of these calibers for the time being.

If further proof of their quality is needed, the last time I checked, they provide CorBon with ALL of their cast bullets! That speaks volumes, to me, anyway.

Last, but most certainly not least, I shot competition matches for over a decade using Oregon Trails Lazercast bullets out of my Kimber 1911 .45, and I do not think there is a finer bullet out there for such purposes as their 230 and 250gr. rn. And yes, I used the 250gr. RN in my 1911 to knock down the steel plates, and it worked!!

Having said that, there are many bullet companies out there that make very good products these days, going by what I have heard and read. Penn bullets, Missouri bullet co., etc, all seem to be putting out excellent products now judging by what is said here and on other boards.

Bottem line; give Leadhead bullets a try, I do not think you will be dissapointed, and if you are, you will have a parade of choices to look at.

JMHO, and as always, YMMV

Willy

Dang, I was going to suggest either of these two ( because of the coating on 'em )... but they no longer show .44 ( .429ish ) bullets... the coating is great ! Little if any leading , no excess smoke, cleanup is a breeze...
