Which In Stock Powder 45c

This will be my first reload. I have read a few books some twice, but l am looking for some personal experience and advice.

I found these powders in stock locally.
Universal Clays, 1lb and 4lbs.
Trail Boss, 5lbs.
HS-6, 1lb.

Which would you pick for a targets for a Uberti 45c ?

Also I might want to load 38 later if I still have a barrel and fingers.

I don't have primers or brass yet so I can wait on another powder.

From what I have read I am leading toward the Universal, but like that Trail Boss will be hard to double charge.

They'll all work, but I'd probably go with Universal. It'll work well for .38 Special loads too.

HS6 is a great powder for 45 Colt medium to heavy loads, but the Universal Clays would be the better choice for target loads.

I like trailboss a lot in .44mag/specials. Its a great target powder.

Universal (like Unique) is one of the MOST versatile handgun powders available.
Suggest it from your list.

Trail Boss for the powder puff loads. Great powder to get started with reloading as it fills the case nicely.

Unique/Universal for light to medium loads. Standard load is 8.0g under 250g RNFP.

HS-6 for a bit heavier load. I like 13g under 255g SWC.

Note to a poster above. Just 'Clays' is different than 'Universal Clays'. They are completely different powders.

It's one of those bad-labeling brand names that can lead to trouble.

I have had outstanding results with Universal in 45 Colt with 255gr bullets. It is my first choice in 45 Colt.

Universal Clays is a commonly used name for Universal. When I got my first bottle of it I was so confused (because it says Universal Clays Technology on the bottle) that I ended up calling Hodgdon about it.

I am a fan of trail boss in the .45 colt.
For the novice, its easy to avoid a double charge.
Its great for mild target loads.

Thanks for all the post and the powder clarifications. That is really usefully advice for a beginer.

I received my bullets yesterday, Oregon Trail 250g RN FP .452 .

Now all I need is primers and brass.

One more question. Do you seat all similar ( regardless of maker ) lead 250g. RN FP bullets the same OAL . Or is that a something you have to experiment with and the reason I should start with the low suggested charge ?

Oregan Trail 250gr RNFP:

Seat it to the upper-middle of the crimp groove for proper OAL on that bullet.

As the Uberti in 45 Colt is basically the 130 year-old original single action design, stick with original presure loads.

When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Single Action .45 Colt (Sometimes colloquially referred to by its alias as the .45 'Long' Colt or .45LC). Don't leave home without it. That said, the .44Spec is right up their too... but the .45 Colt is still the king.
