refinish on Cattleman Hombre 45lc

ok I got my cattleman Hombre that I purchased online and I have to say I absolutely hated the Matte Black finish so I antiqued it my self whaddya think

I like it. I kinda did the same thing to mine. I also put a steel grip fame on mine.

you put a steel frame on yours ? you mean you replaced the brass backstrap etc ? please elaborate , what you did where you got the part so on and so on

You need a few things, a buffing wheel , a tube of semi-chrome and some 3M scotch brite.
Disassemble the gun or at the very least remove
The cylinder , cover the frame and cylinder in a light film
Of the semi-chrome .
You'll want to use pictures of old guns to kinda
Get the idea of what you want and after that simply
Buff off the finish with the buffing wheel.
You will want some spots more worn than
Others and that is what the scotchbrite is for
Again try to follow pictures of real ones so you
can see the real wear patterns.
You will want to do the brass part also
It will take the dull sheen off and it looks better
that way .
You can take it a step farther by nicking up
the grips and adding scratches to the frame
And cylinder again follow pictures.

I just swapped the grip frame (trigger guard/backstrap) with a Uberti 1861 navy I already had. They were pretty much interchangeable. I wanted a brass grip on the navy anyway, so it worked out. If you want to buy parts, try VTI gunparts, or Cimarron.

I am ordinarily NOT a fan of artifically antiquing a handgun, but I think you did a fine job and it's a definite improvement over the factory "spray paint" black.

I like the matte black for its non glare finish and the much cheaper price but the antiquing does make the gun look like it has a history.

I misread the copyright rules my bad ,

anyway does anyone know did of the real SAA 1873's have brass trigger guards and backstraps I can't find any pictures of a real one , I suppose they did with a custom order but were they a production model ?

I think you have mis-interpreted those rules. You own that picture, right?

No, they did not. I don't believe it was even an order option from the factory, but don't quote me on that. That is not to say someone couldn't put a brass grip frame on a SAA. In an issue of Guns of the Old West (spring 2008), there was a pic of an original SAA .44-40 (made in 1882) with a brass grip from an 1851 navy revolver. The barrel was also cut to 2.2 inches. So anything's possible.

as per MJN77's post I'm changing the back strap and trigger guard, I just think it would look better with steel in place of the brass, I ordered a back strap today from VTI ,All they had in unfinished was an old rusted one that he sold me for $30, that is perfect for this project , I'll strip the rust with navel jelly and patina it . trigger guard is next I'll post pics when I'm completely done
