I have access to Trail Boss and Clays, im loading 45 Colt.
170 gr lead, Federal primers, R-P shells
How many grains of either powder for a light to medium load please.
I have looked at Hodgdon tables, but would like to hear from exp. shooters.

Go to your local gun shop that sells reloading supplies and they will
have free pamphlets of various powders for your needs. Or buy a Speer
loading manual.

I'm a new reloader too and I found a great resource right on line. You can look up the manuf. of the powder and they have load data. For trail boss:

http://www.imrpowder.com/data/handgu...ss-feb2005.php

I looked at reloadersnest.com and for my 45-70 didn't see any loads that would push a 405 grain bullet slower than 1100 fps. I've also looked through all the manuals, none of them mention Trail Boss. You have to go to the manuf. website for that info. I'm thinking of starting my own website with COMPLETE load data for the 45-70 because every source I look at has different info. I spent about half an hour at Sportsmans Warehouse and looked through all their load books. Trail Boss wasn't in any of them and I think its one of the few powders (if not the only one) that will actually slow my 405 gr. 45-70 down to less than 1000 fps (subsonic). I would say that the Internet is your best resource, especially from the companies that make the powder. Don't waste your money on manuals. If you need to, check them out at the library and write down the loads you need.

Loading data for subsonic 45-70 with the 405gr jacketed bullet. From Lyman Manual #45 which means it's old, 11.0 grs Unique gets you 890'ps. That's the minimum load with a max load of 15.0 grs = 1223'ps. I'm using 34.0 grs IMR 3031 under a 405 lead bullet and it comes out at 1120'ps. It's a minimum load too. Neither use any kind of filler or wad. Primers are standard Remington 9 1/2. Hope this helps.
