10mm to 40sw
This may be an old discussion but.. Has anyone had experience trimming 10mm to use in a 40sw? I've been finding a lot of 10mm brass at the range lately. Thanks

Hey Marine,
One can certainly trim 10MM cases to 40S&W cases, but like Alaska suggested, it would probably be less hassle to simply trade them with someone. Best wishes, Dave Wile |

WELCOME to TFL! The web area of the 10mm is thicker than on a 40S&W. If you load a trimmed 10mm case to a max 40S&W load, you will be over pressure or worse yet spike a higher pressure, because of the reduce case volume. Loading mid range 40's should be fine.

The .40 was develpoed by shortening the 10mm, but they decided to switch to a small pistol primer for the .40.
The problem arose from chambering the smaller 9mm size platforms for the .40. If I recall, when using the large primer the ejector could contact the primer when clearing the chamber of a live round. Hence the switch to the small primer. If you trim 10mm cases you will have to use large pistol primers. Something to think about. Trimming is no fun anyways. |

Like the others have said, you could probably trade the 10mm for .40s or better yet sell the 10mm brass. You can always tell the 10mm shooters at the range that reload because they are the ones on their hands and knees searching for the ejected brass...

Did he say 10mm brass?
I'd be happy to discuss a trade of 40 S&W brass for 10mm brass.
PM me, please.

I asked the same question a couple of years back. What I was told is that the web area is thicker and teh "Internal Ballistics" would be different due to that.
So trade it, it's worth more anyway. JSF

Most places will buy 10mm brass from you for more than you'll be paying for an equal amount of .40 S&W. (or sell it privately) |

Thanks for the input, I'll give the trade some thought, don't really need anymore 40sw though. The 10mm to 40 is more of a curiosity on my part. Now if you want to trade some lake city 556 brass for it...

WELCOME to TFL!!! You would probably get a lot more information if you open your own thread with this qustion. Is your bullet cast or plated or jacketed??? This will make a lot of difference. There isn''t a lot of data on 160 gr bullets. Hodgdon, the distribut of HS-6 does not list a 160gr bullet but does list a 155gr XTP HS-6, Start load-8.8gr Max Load-11.0gr another reference lists 165gr Jacketed HS-6, Start load-8.1gr Max Load-10.4gr Again, Please list your bullet type. Including which weapon you are using it in would also be helpful.

Depending on what you are going to do with it, I like the 135grn HP from Nosler for the 10mm and the 40S&W. Smokin velocity and real good acuracy...
