How do you group at 50 yards?

I know theres some pretty skilled people on here and wanted to see what other people group like at 50 yards.

At 50 yds? I can keep them all on the paper. On a good day a can keep them all in the scoring rings. Mel Gibson's smiley face in Lethal Weapon .... nope, haven't been able to do that one yet (I keep trying though

( how big a target do I get ....4' by 4' ....and a bulls eye of 18" ).....ok, I can probably hit that...

Thanks to practicing at 50 yards every range trip, I can generally keep most all rounds well within an 8" circle, standing unsupported, with centerfire handguns.
And within a 6" circle for .22 handguns.
There's often a couple of bullseye competitors there who put that to shame, though.
But that's only with slow and deliberate shots.
For faster shooting, the same results at 25 yds are about the limit.

About 20+ years ago when I was shooting a 7.5 inch scoped Redhawk 44 magnum a lot I was keeping them all on a paper plate at 95 yards. This was off a sandbag rest.

A few years ago I shot a few <5" @ 50yd groups (my group size goal) with a .38 Super 1911 and a USP .45. After a car accident and a minor stroke I've recovered enough to reach the <5" mark again. Last week I shot two consecutive 4-3/4" groups sighting in a new target load with my single action .357.

I'm hoping to shoot IHMSA Field Pistol again next spring. 25, 50, 75 and 100 yard half scale silhouettes from the standing position. It's a lot of fun and it will humble most of us.

The accuracy level you can get shooting off a rest is far better than what a person can do offhand. Handguns fired from a rest are capable of rifle accuracy. Handguns fired offhand, it is the person holding them that is the limiting factor.

With irons I think I am doing good keeping 4 to 5 shots on a 12" gong target offhand at 50 yards.

With an aimpoint on top, I have kept them all on target, but it is very easy to miss.

The guy who shoots this pistol offhand, he told me he shot a little bird standing on his 50 yard target, one hand offhand. Poor birdy.

All the 50 yard shooting I do and I can't find a single 50 yard target in my file, how about 5 shots at 100 yards with a S&W M15 41 Magnum.

The only time I ever tried a 50 yard shot with any handgun was a few times in a couple of IPSC matches, YEARS ago. I remember hitting an 8" steel plate with a Colt Government Model, those times, but I don't remember how many shots it took.

IIRC, all it took was a steady hand, and my eagle eyes, and just a touch more front sight, and those plates rang like the bells of St. Mary's.

IRL, they probably looked like they were being straffed by a Cobra gunship.

The answer is "I don't"

When it gets out to 50, I grab a rifle

My fixed sight 3" SP101 isn't very good for this beginner handgun shooter to be anywhere near successful at 50. If I've been in frequent practice, I can generally hit my 8" plat 3-4 times out of 5 from 40 yards.

Who rechambered your model 15 K frame 38 special combat masterpiece to 41 mag? Was it expensive? 5 shot cylinder?

I think instead you have a model 58 in 41 magnum. At least in the photo, that appears to be what you have.

Ruger Super Blackhawk From a rest, and that's the only way I fire it at game, 3"
T/C Contender 14" 223 Remington, under an inch. Same gun, Super 14 35 Remington, an inch. Both sighted in @ 100 yds.
Any of my CCW or SD handguns. Why try?

Pretty well with my 638. Usually 4 of 5 I get in CM. What ever happened to the lost flyer? But it always seem to be the last shot total miss.

When I wrote my statement I had in mind one of those Rem 700 short action pistols. A friend has one. The Thompson Center single barrel pistol is capable of exceptional accuracy.

Compared to a friend's F Class unlimited rifle, not only will none of my pistols shot as accurately, neither will any of my target rifles!

My revolvers are not as accurate as most of my rifles.

The best pistols are capable of outstanding accuracy, but it takes a rest to see it. I would agree that the average, and maybe even the below average rifle will shoot tighter groups than the average pistol.

But I still see handgun groups that are amazing and beyond my comprehension.

This was of a PPC champ and his 50 yard offhand double action target. I can't do that!

Years ago when I was hunting regularly I could get about a 12" group at 100 yards with my Super Blackhawk, and could regularly bowl over the rams at 200 meters.

Now I seldom get a chance to shoot over 25 yards.

Slamfire: That might be the exception. I imagine/have heard those single shot TCs are tack drivers. All in all, I get what you're saying. Hope I didn't come across wrong.

This gun will group under an inch at 50 yds. I've shot 4" groups at 200 meters, but not every time I tried.
