Placing a new Powder Valley order, Any Suggestions?
Hello all!
So I'm getting ready to place a refill order on Powder Valley; Buying primers and my 10lbs of W231 to refill my stables. Every order, I attempt to try at least one new Powder for my handguns to make a load for it. It's both a fun adventure and kind of a preparation thing. I'm also going to be developing loads for two new primers as well since I can't find CCI anywhere. But I digress. I am looking for suggestions for ONE pound of powder to try. Ones that you have had good luck with or that you found interesting. I have already tried W231, Red Dot, 2400, and dabbled in Green Dot(Not a full lb). Please note that I am using a Dillon XL650 powder measure and primer feed. On that note. anyone have issues with Tula primers in the XL650 primer feed?

Knowing what cartridges you're loading would help with powder suggestions...

Bullseye? I use it, but never chronographed my loads.

Bullseye and Unique are my two favorite handgun powders.

Yes indeed. I forgot to mention Unique. I've been through a few pounds of it too.

I've been using Titegroup in 9mm for soft-recoiling loads for the wife. Seems to be clean and accurate. Load data available for 38 spc and 45 ACP as well. Might be too close to Red Dot though.

Bullseye, Universal, Power Pistol, AA5 (all ball/small flake powders), and Unique of your powder measure doesn't mind larger flakes.
Bullseye and Unique would be great for the .38, the others are great for semi-auto cartridges. Unique is also great for semi, but have not tried Bullseye in them, just revolver.

VV N320 is my upgrade powder for HP38/W231. Both are great, N320 is a little cleaner, a little more accurate for me and has a smoother recoil by my feel. Works well in all the calibers you listed (although I do not use it for .38, I stick with HP38/W231)

WST for .38 special and .45. It can be used for 9 mm but I think it fills the case too much. WST is very consistent in the 550b powder measure. AA5 will work for .38, .45 and 9 mm. I think it works best in 9 mm.

Tula - I loaded up 100 rounds of large primer .45 ACP last weekend in my 550. They loaded fine but I have not had a chance to fire them yet.

Can't go wrong with AA#5. Meters very well and burns clean. Decent price too.

I don't recall just where it was I got the .38 special load data. I use 4.0 grains of powder, Winchester SP, and Montana Gold 158 grain JHP bullets. It give a nice load that is soft in recoil, clean burning and accurate too. Going to 4.4 grains the groups were spreading out. I use a Dan Wesson 4" VH pistol with this load. I use AA7 for .357 Mag. and same bullet. I might try some AA9 one day. It is on the shelf when I get around to it.
There is some old data about using WST in 9 mm. WST is the old 452AA powder. Start @ 4.3gr & work up to 5gr as max, depending of course on your OAL. This is for 124 grain FMJ bullets. If you have some old books try looking up data for 452AA. As with any new load work up slowly. For .45 I use 5.2 to 5.3 grains of WST with a Montana Gold 185 grain JHP bullet. I have used an OAL of 1.200 to 1.220 with this load. |

Bullseye, AA#5, Power Pistol, or Titegroup.
I would get some Bullseye.... That way you'll have tested all the oldest (but good) powders (Bullseye, Unique, and 2400) . The only powders you'll ever need.... I've marked Bullseye as an excellent powder form .45 ACP and .357 magnum loaded down to .38 level. Don't shoot any .38 cases in my revolvers. Don't shoot 9mm either....
