It's about as broad as it is long.
The guns are close fraternal twins. I had a G19, and foolishly traded it away. I had trading fodder, but all I could find was the G23. I'm good with it. At some point, I may convert it to 9mm, but, for now, it's fine just the way it is. Besides, I have "nines" out the ying-yang and only two "fotays".

On that note, I think the G19 is the best Glock there is.

Check any of the .45 vs. .40 threads and the .40 S&W recoil is described by all but a few as being "snappy". I call it "time off target". The 9 mm is much easier to shoot well. Unless you spend a lot of time shooting you'll find it the same.
You couldn't give me a .40 S&W. It does nothing a 9 mm or a .45 ACP won't. That doesn't mean I find it worthless - it'll still stop a human being; I find better ways to do that with existing hardware.

Hey thanks for all the responses, I was out of town and was without a computer.
I still havent made up my mind. I would like to go with the .40 for the bigger bullet but I want to 9mm for the cheap ammo...decisions decisions. The 9mm conversion barrel seems like a good route to go because I cant afford both. |

When I was working, I had the Glock 23 a few years. It operated fine and shot well. My only complaint was I cared more for the 45 and was tooled up to reload it. The 40 S&W is a fine round, I think netter than the 9mm for stopping an assailant.

Glock 19 vs. Glock 23
I know this is an old thread, but I own a Glock 23 and LOVE it. I also own a Springfield XD 40 and XD 40 compact. So I am invested in the .40 S&W.
I have a couple of friends who are Colorado Springs cops and we have been at the range with their S&W 9mm and my .40's and they both say the same thing... "Well, yeah... the .40 is a better round, but if you put the 9mm in the right place, then you won't need it". eh... I don't practice as much as a full-duty police officer, so I'll take the extra stopping power for the same weight. It's the Glock 23 for me... or the Springfield XD 40 / XD 40 Compact. |

I too sold my G23 for a G19, If you like to shoot and don't reload, saving money on Ammo goes a Long Way!
My Vote is G19 |

G23 - like others pointed out, you can get 9mm and .357sig conversion barrels.

I own both. They are the exact same size in all respects. I practice with the 19 as it is cheaper to shoot, and refine with the 23 to make the adjustments needed as it has a bit more punch. I carry the 23. I will give up the two extra shots for better stopping power.

I've had the 19 for years. Picked up a gen 4 g23 last weekend, shot it today. I don't see what all the talk about unhappiness in the 40 recoil is all about. Ill tell you this you're going to have to have top notch jhp in 9mm and it needs to be in +p variety in order to work it's best. It is also snappy and is equally expensive. But I carried the 9 for years and I've shot enough stuff to know if I couldn't do.it with good 9s then I couldn't have done it with .40. The wife seems to have taken possession of the g19 now. I only bought the 23 because 40 ammo has become more available than 9 in my area. During the last 2 ammo crunches 40 was most available for me.

Get the Glock 40
Much greater stopping power with 180 gr. hollow points, 9mm can only use 147 grain hollow points max. Yah it kicks more but theres a reason for that, it hits far harder than any 9 mil. |

It does not exist in handguns. Get the one you shoot best. Positive accurate hits matter more than caliber. Shoot a decent JHP and you will be fine.

19 vs 23
Really 9 mm vs .40 cal once again.
This thing has gone round and round so long and will not die like a bad case of malaria. I recently read the article by Ayoob claiming GENERALLY 20 gauge is just as effective as 12 gauge most of the time and much less prone to induce flinching from recoil so why not just go with 20 gauge. (Pretty good piece.) (http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/ayoob120.html) This got me to thinking about this caliber debate issue again and whether anyone agrees with me, here is how I see this caliber-war-debate-thing: If having a slightly more powerful caliber makes you feel more secure than go for it. If having more capacity makes you feel safer go for that. If no pistol makes you feel safe get a shotgun or rifle. Pico |

Now that being said, I have never noticed any different recoil from either handgun. Although I would still buy the 23 again and if I decided to use 9mm, just get the wolf barrel and shoot 9mm. I think the 23 is more versatile in that respect. Currently I am tooled up for 40 and 45 among others, so no need for me to have a 9mm. though the time may come when the wife decides which semiauto she wants. As of now she carries a 38 wheel gun. She does like the Colt Mustang in 380. Who knows. I hope this helps. Like I said I have never noticed a difference. Mel

For CCW take the G23. You're giving up...2 rounds? I'll take 14 rounds of 40 over 16 rounds of 9 any day.

It depends on your intended use. I have only one .40 and its a Glock G27 with the Longwolf 9mm conversion barrel. The 40 mags actually work too using 9mm ammo.
If your goal is to have multiple calibers using only 1 gun, then get the 23. Otherwise the 19 is a better choice |
