.308 brass and loads.....

OK guys, I've decided on the Savage 12BVSS in .308 and am curious, between Winchester and Remington brass, which do you prefer and what are your pet loads in this gun? COL, powder, bullet, primer, ect..... Thx for the info and help.

I am using only Lapua brass in my 308 bolt gun. The time saved not having to do any case prep is worth it alone.

What to load

My 308 seems to favor RE-15 Winchester primers with 150-168 gr bullets. "Your mileage may vary".

Winchester developed a baloon head case for the '92 Palma match (U.S. was hosting that year) with a little extra capacity. That design became their standard case and I would recommend it. Tight .308 cases (IMI or LC match come to mind) will give you about 10% less powder capacity. Other commercial cases are in the middle.

Winchester cases, unlike Norma or Lapua, will need to be sorted for concentricity. Get the NECO tool or one of the others that allows you to measure case wall runout both at the neck and just ahead of the web at the case head. I usually sort by this measuring tool, then by weight to get the best 10% for match shooting. The next best 20-30% become "good" test cases for practice. 55-65% become general purpose cases for routine practice or hunting loads. About 5% are so far out of whack (six thousandths or more runout) I don't trust them to shoot at all well. If the necks are within a couple mils I will use them for firelapping. Otherwise I just toss them.

Twice I have found Winchester cases with no flashhole punched through. These will break your decapping pin if you let them in the press this way, so keep an eye out for them.

Assuming you're going to punch holes in paper.

Sierra 168 Matchkings are an excellent bullet to start with. As to powder, I've had good luck with Varget, Reloader 15, and WW748. Used a lot of Winchester brass and it has held up pretty well. I typically use Remington 9-1/2 rifle primers.
If you're looking for a hunting load, I'd suggest the starting with the Speer 165 Grand Slam over Varget or RE15.
Let us know how you make out.
Take Care

Yes, basically I will be punching paper out to 300 hundred yards or so but at the same time, I plan on using the 12BVSS for long range coyote hunting.

I thought about getting a Johnny Walker system and giving it a shot. In all reality, there is a place where I could actually get a shot of about 600 to 700 yards but don't realistically expect to be able to hit one at that range but it sure would be fun to try.

I had considered the 168gr. MK bullets as I've heard that they're very accurate and they would be acceptable on a coyote also.

Has anyone here used these callers and do they work as well as advertised?

FWIW, I tried both Varget and H335 in my .308, and groups for me were just a smidge tighter with H-335. But really close. My favorite load is 46gr. H335 with a 150gr. Speer or Sierra Spitzer, with a CCI 250 primer. COL is 2.80, which is longer than spec, but fits my rifle fine.

out of my .308 I'm getting really good results with both the Sierra Matchkings in 168 and 180grs using IMR 4895 powder, Win brass, and Win large rifle primers.

OK, I've ordered 200 168gr. Matchking HPBT and 100 Hornady 168gr HPBT to see what my gun will prefer. Truth be known, both bullets will probably outshoot me anyday. I also ordered 100 rounds of Laupa brass on sale for $37. I fiqured I'd try it since it was only approx. $17 more than Win. or Rem. brass. If it's as good as I hear, it's worth the extra $17. I've also got a pound of Varget and a pound of W748 waiting. Can't wait to ty it out.
