Info on a Springfield 1903 Please...
Inherited a Springfield 1903 in 30-06 from my uncle. Serial number is 636705 and from what I understand this is an "unsafe" range? The barrel is not stamped though so I think it may be a refurb or sportsterized version? Not really sure and was hoping someone could give me some insight?

How long is the barrel? It looks like it might have been shortened enough to remove the markings, but it looks like an original M1903 barrel, not a commercial replacement.
The problem with the so-called "low number" Springfields (under 800000) is that some of the receivers were brittle and no one can possibly tell which ones. The odds are against one blowing up, and ammunition is a factor, but I choose not to take chances. Your decision is up to you. Jim |
